Tell about Mughal Emperor Humayun ?

While growing up in Afghanistan, Humayan learned Turki, Arabic, and Persian and was interested in mathematics, philosophy, and astrology. To further train his son, the emperor Babur appointed him governor of Badakhashan at the age of 20. In one significant battle, Humayan defeated Hamid Khan, an Afghan chief.

Humāyūn, also called Nāṣir al-Dīn Muḥammad, (born March 6, 1508, Kabul [Afghanistan]—died January 1556, Delhi [India]), second Mughal ruler of India, who was more an adventurer than a consolidator of his empire.

Humayun’s Tomb inspired several major architectural innovations, culminating in the construction of the Taj Mahal.

Nasiruddin Humayun was the son of Babar. He belonged to Mughal dynasty and was the ruler of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Northeastern part of India from 1530-1540 and again from 1555-1556.

The son and successor of Bābur, who had founded the Mughal dynasty, Humāyūn ruled from 1530 to 1540 and again from 1555 to 1556.

Subsequently, the young governor fought at Panipat and Khanua, two decisive battles in Indian history, and was granted jagir (landlordship) of Sambhal. In 1530, while on his deathbed at Agra, Babur named Humayan his successor. Even though Humayan had been trained as an administrator and a warrior, he could not keep pace with the rapidly changing political events in northern India.

He succeeded his father, Babur, as a ruler of India in 1530, while his half brother Kamran Mirza got the territories of Kabul and Lahore. Upon his accession to the throne, Humayun had two main rivals namely Sultan Bahadur of East and Sher Shah Suri.

The Hindustan (India), which Babur had bequeathed to Humayun was a magnificent but shaky inheritance. Notes Kulke and Rothermund: "His succession was by no means a foregone conclusion: according to Mughal custom all royal princes were equally entitled to inherit power, which led to many rivalries in later years when Mughal princes fought each other until the most competent, the most ruthless, or simply the luckiest ascended the throne."

Humāyūn inherited the hope rather than the fact of empire, because the Afghans and Rajputs were merely restrained but not reconciled to Mughal supremacy by the Mughal victories at Panipat (1526), Khanua (1527), and the Ghaghara (1529).

Humayun launched the attack on Sultan Bahadur and captured the fort of Mandu and Champaner with in a short span of time, while Bahadur escaped and took up refuge with the Portuguese.

Within his own circle was Humayan's brother Kamran, who was consistently faithless. The Moghul presence was still nothing more than a military occupation, and Babur had been able to sustain the empire largely by his personal reputation and by the loyalty of his own followers.

Bahādur Shah of Gujarat, encouraged by Afghan and Mughal émigrés, challenged the Mughals in Rajasthan, and, although Humāyūn occupied Gujarat in 1535, the danger there ended only with Bahādur’s death in 1537.

Humayun got success in this venture while on the other hand Sher Shah saw the opportunity and attacked Agra, the Mughal Capial.

Though Humayun was able to save Agra but he has to lose Gaur, in Bengal to Sher Shah Suri. Subsequently, with the help of various war tactics Sher Shah was able to gain the control of Agra also.

Meanwhile, an Afghan soldier of fortune, Shēr Shah of Sūr, had consolidated his power in Bihar and Bengal.

Humayun’s brother Kamran, who was the ruler of Kandhar did not help him and instead sided with Sher Shah. Humayun has to fled India and took refuge in Lahore. Then Sher Shah marched towards Lahore too, Humayun send him the message that “I have left you the whole of Hindustan. Leave Lahore alone and let Sirhind be the boundary between you and me”.

He defeated Humāyūn at Chausa in 1539 and at Kannauj in 1540, expelling him from India.

In reply to this Sher Shah sent him the message that “I have left you the Kabul, you should go there. Humayun has to leave Lahore also and took refuge in Persia. With the help of king of Persia he tried to regain his lost military strength. He captured Kandhar. On the other hand Humayun’s brother Kamran sought to have him killed, but he repeatedly forgave all of his brothers for every fault of them.
