At some studios will find specialised Pilates equipment like the Reformer, the Cadillac or special barrels and chairs.

We'll discuss this equipment in more detail but to start with you really don't need a lot of specialised equipment.

Integrating elements of yoga, martial arts, and various Western forms of exercise, Pilates truly has it all. Beyond simply working to strengthen the body, Pilates classes can help improve posture, muscle tone, flexibility, and joint mobility, as well as relieve stress, tension, and anxiety.

The original machine was call the “magic circle”. When Joe Pilates first came up with the idea for what we all know today as, well, Pilates, he constructed the initial machine from the steel bands that come on beer kegs. This “magic circle” was a common theme in all early Pilates classes.

The Reformer is basically a bed-like frame with a sliding carriage which is attached to one end with a set of springs. These springs are adjustable to offer different levels of resistance.

Pilates is very different from yoga. Many people tend to lump the two into the same category, but they are actually quite different. Pilates is a physical fitness system, not a variation of yoga. Joe Pilates, a physicist, created Pilates with the belief that both mental and physical health are important. While elements of yoga can be found within Pilates routines, they are not the same.

There are also shoulder blocks on the carriage which stops you from sliding off as you push or pull the carriage.

Just one hour of Pilates will burn calories throughout the rest of the day. At its very center, Pilates is a form of resistance training, which has been scientifically proven to create lean muscle and boost metabolism. This means that by attending a one hour Pilates class, you will be burning off calories as you go about the rest of your day.

A foot-bar is attached at the spring end of the reformer. This foot-bar can be used by your hands or feet as you move the carriage along. Long straps with handles are attached to the other end of the frame. These can pulled with your arms or legs and will also move the carriage.

Pilates works the entire body. Many Pilates instructors will begin the class by asking students to take a body scan. What this does is bring awareness to how they are feeling now, at the start of class, and compare it to how they feel after. Every single exercise that is done during a Pilates class uses every part of the body, providing students with a full body workout that will provide results.

To use the reformer, you can lie, sit or stand on it and perform exercises which push, pull or hold the carriage steady while the springs provide the right amount of resistance needed. One of the benefits of the reformer is that it can lengthen your muscles as they resists the force of the springs. This is called eccentric muscle contraction and is excellent for achieving strong, long muscles without added bulk.

Pilates is all about quality over quantity. Once you attend your first Arlington Pilates class you will quickly understand what we mean by this. Pilates focuses on getting all aspects right – from the posture, the breathing, the movement, the number of repetitions, and how much energy is spent. When it comes to Pilates, it’s not about how quickly you can do a pose or exercise, but how well you do it.

The reformer is particularly useful if you have some form of injury or are recuperating from an injury as your muscles can be gently stretched and strengthened using only slight resistance.

Pull out your gym mat and get ready to do a series of movements that will stabilize and strengthen your core.

The exercises are usually done in a specific order, one right after another. The movements have names, like "The 100," Criss-Cross," the "Elephant," and the "Swan.

The moves may look simple, but they take a lot of precision and control. It's not like doing a bunch of crunches; there's a strong emphasis on technique.

If you are looking to strengthen your abdomen and pelvis as well as maintain good posture, then Pilates is for you. It also has a strong mind/body connection, so you may like it if you enjoy yoga but need a more intense core workout.

You can tailor Pilates to your individual needs, so it can be a great addition to your aerobic workout, even if you have health issues like heart disease, high blood pressure, and cholesterol. Check with your doctor first.

Pilates is all about achieving the right method in your exercise. Now you all must know that Pilates and mats go hand in hand. Traditionally there was a lot of use of chairs and tables. In the contemporary version of Pilates we’ve seen a lot of use of rollers, exercise balls, rotating disks and resistance bands. But mind you– a mat is must and it is your best friend while practicing Pilates.

And you thought Pilates was all about moving the limbs around in different motion? Pilates is all about precise movements and it demands a lot of concentration. As funny as it sounds, Pilates is based on the belief that ‘the way exercises are done is more important than the exercises themselves’.

When Joseph Pilates was working on developing Pilates as a system of physical fitness, he also termed it ‘Contrology’. Can you think of a reason why? It’s not rocket science. He believed that whoever is practicing Pilates should be in constant control of each and every movement. What’s the benefit? Experts say that it results in enhanced muscular control of the back, limbs and abdominal muscles.

We are not talking about just ‘breathing’. Pilates involves slow movement and a series of exercises along with attention to proper breathing techniques. If you didn’t know, a lot of stress is laid on exhaling by wriggling out all the air from your lungs, while practicing Pilates. It is said to be much like ‘squeezing out a wet towel’. Any form of Pilates will not be complete without conscious breathing in and breathing out.

Okay, here is the truth– there are basically two ways in which Pilates can be practised. Mat based Pilates involve a series of exercises done on the floor. The key here is to use the combination of gravity and your body weight to provide resistance to the muscles. Equipment based Pilates is exercise that incorporates the use of various equipments and weights for muscle training.

If you are someone who likes to do everything the right way, Pilates is definitely for you. Right from the posture, the breathing, the movement, the number of repetitions, and the amount of energy that is spent– everything needs to be done in a precise manner. As you might know, there are thousands of books and videotapes out there in the market. We’d suggest that you avoid going down that path and learn from a qualified teacher or physiotherapist.

Very few people are aware of this– the term ‘Pilates’ is generic and free for unrestricted use at the moment in Australia. Did you know that this means anyone can offer advice on Pilates to the society, whether trained or untrained? That’s massive and can be dangerous! Check that your Pilates teachers qualifications suits your needs.
