Luxo Jr. and the trash-collecting robot WALL-E interact for the first time in a teaser trailer for the 2008 film. Luxo Jr’s bulb goes out, and WALL-E rolls in to replace it.

Woody's facial features are slightly based on a talking Casper the Friendly Ghost doll that Lasseter had as a kid.

Who would’ve thought a Peter Dinklage-led indie movie would’ve inspired one of Pixar’s most celebrated films? “We looked at how other people have dealt with the subject matter,” Docter told Movie Retriever. "We looked at The Station Agent, a great, simple, character-based story of a guy who’s much like Carl, who comes out of his shell.

Pixar signed a three-film contract with Disney back in 1991, according to the New York Times. The deal would entitle Pixar to only 10 to 15 percent of the profits from the movies. The first film made as a result of the contract was Toy Story (1995).

As we’ve written about previously, Toy Story 2 faced a pretty major hurdle when a stray computer command entered by an anonymous mischief-maker deleted 90 percent of the work done on the film a year before it was set to come out. Luckily, the film’s supervising technical director, Galyn Susman, had a copy of the film that she’d been working on from home, and disaster was averted.

Woody in Toy Story was originally supposed to be a talking ventriloquist’s dummy. According to the Verge, then-CEO of Disney Michael Eisner found dummies to be “creepy,” so the character was changed to the talking cowboy doll we are all familiar with today.

Cars is dedicated to Joe Ranft, a longtime collaborator of John Lasseter, Pixar’s chief creative officer, and his co-writer and co-director on the film. Ranft died in a car accident on August 16, 2005, while Cars was still in production. Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride (2005), which Ranft executive produced, is also dedicated to him.

Reportedly, Tom Hanks was interested in the role of Woody because as a child he always wondered whether his toys came alive when he wasn't looking.

Originally Barbie was intended to appear in Toy Story, but Mattel rejected the idea, so instead the character of Bo Peep was created in her place.

In discussing the best way to animate Joy in Inside Out, production designer Ralph Eggleston came up with an idea … but it wasn’t cheap. “We worked on the idea of [Joy] being effervescent or sparkly for champagne bubbles, for about eight months,” Eggleston said.

After Hooch chews up Turner’s car seat, Turner scolds him in a hilarious scene that impressed Pixar’s animators.

Monsters, Inc. (2001) and Cars (2006) are the only two films that were nominated for the award without winning it, while Cars 2 (2011), Monsters University (2013), The Good Dinosaur (2015), Finding Dory (2016), and Cars 3 (2017), were not nominated.

The first Toy Story film was the first full-length feature film to be made entirely using CGI. It had a production budget of only $30 million, less than half of that of Disney’s Lion King (1994), which cost $79.3 million.

Up and Toy Story 3 were also the respective second and third animated films to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, the first being Walt Disney Animation Studios' Beauty and the Beast (1991). Luxo Jr., a character from the studio's 1986 short film of the same name, is the studio's mascot.

Hasbro and Mattel both turned down the toy license for the Toy Story franchise, believing that they wouldn’t have enough time to put a toy line together in the 11 months they had before the film came out. Small, Canada-based company Thinkway Toys got the license instead and created Woody and Buzz toys; Pixar tried to get them to manufacture Sid’s nightmare-inducing “Mutant Toys“ (a.k.a. a baby doll head with Erector set spider legs), but for some reason they passed on the idea.

Toy Story made $29.1 million its opening weekend, almost earning back its full production budget. It went on to become the highest-grossing film that year. The film’s epic opening weekend beat out Titanic (1997), which grossed only $28.6 million.
