For more than 20 years, the brilliant filmmakers at Pixar have been winning over audiences (of all ages) with their lineup of clever animated films that truly are fun for the whole family. From Toy Story to The Good Dinosaur, here are 22 things you might not have known about your favorite Pixar movies.

Pixar has produced 20 feature films, beginning with Toy Story (1995), which was the first-ever computer-animated feature film; its most recent film was Incredibles 2 (2018).

Pixar's iconic lamp mascot is named Luxo Jr., and it is named after a 1986 short of the same name.

His main job was directing shorts that would demonstrate the hardware’s capabilities.

In Toy Story, the original Woody was a ventriloquist’s dummy. Executives at Disney, which co-produced the film, requested that he be changed to something else, as ventriloquist’s dummies were usually associated with horror movies, and they didn’t want their cute family movie to be terrifying. (Good call.)

All of the studio's films have debuted with CinemaScore ratings of at least an "A−," indicating positive receptions with audiences.

The Adventures of André and Wally B., Pixar’s first animated short, was produced in 1984. The plot is simple; an android named André gets chased around a forest by a rather persistent bee.

“You had me at ‘fish.’” That is precisely what John Lasseter, Pixar’s chief creative officer, told writer-director Andrew Stanton following his exhaustive pitch for his passion project.

Luxo Jr. was the first CGI film nominated for an Academy Award. It was nominated for a Best Animated Short Film.

The android in The Adventures of André and Wally B. was named after a character in the 1981 movie My Dinner with André, in which actors Wallace Shawn and André Gregory play themselves sharing an evening meal. The movie was a favorite of many of the animators.

The “voice” of WALL·E is legendary sound designer Ben Burtt. Burtt is best known for his work on Star Wars (you can go ahead and thank him for R2-D2’s distinctive chatter), though he’s worked on little-known films like E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and the Indiana Jones series as well.

The studio has also produced dozens of short films. As of August 2018, its feature films have earned approximately $13 billion at the worldwide box office, with an average worldwide gross of $659.7 million per film.

Steve Jobs bought Pixar for $5 million on Feb. 3, 1986. That’s the equivalent of roughly $10.7 million in 2015.

As a way to both market its animation software and generate money, Pixar produced commercials for various companies including: Tropicana, Listerine, and Lifesavers.

On Jeff Goldsmith’s Creative Writing podcast, Monsters, Inc. director Pete Docter recounted his original pitch: “My idea was that what it was about was a 30-year-old man who is like an accountant or something, he hates his job, and one day he gets a book with some drawings in it that he did when he was a kid from his mom.

In 1991, Pixar signed a three-film contract with Disney. The first movie they were to produce for them was Toy Story.

The 1986 Pixar short film Luxo Jr. was a defining film for the company in many ways. The plot involves a young, energetic lamp that struggles to play with a ball as an older lamp looks on. It was the first Pixar film to be nominated for an Academy Award, in the category of Best Animated Short.

Convincing the public that rats make trendy pets is no easy task, but Pixar was able to do so with 2007's Ratatouille. According to the British pet chain Pets at Home, their rat sales shot up by 50 percent following the film’s release. Hopefully the pet owners knew better than to let their rats near the cooking supplies.

In 1993, Disney almost shut down production of Toy Story because they found Woody to be too much of a "sarcastic jerk."

The smaller lamp, Luxo Jr., went on to become a permanent part of Pixar’s logo after the release of Toy Story in 1995. Since their creation, Luxo Jr. and Sr. have made several cameos in Pixar’s feature films and shorts.

Copies of the medical school text Gray’s Anatomy were given to the digital sculptors to help them figure out how the human body moves. Live action footage of Pixar animators walking was also used.

Finding Nemo (2003), along with its sequel Finding Dory (2016), as well as Toy Story 3 (2010) and Incredibles 2 (2018) are among the 50 highest-grossing films of all time, with the latter being the second-highest-grossing animated film of all time with a gross of $1.2 billion. Fifteen of Pixar's films are also among the 50 highest-grossing animated films of all time.

Fearing the film would be shut down, the film's director John Lasseter and the film's writers completely rewrote the script and "fixed" Woody in less than a week.
