The man who has been fighting for the preservation of forests in the Himalayas celebrates his 90th birthday today. Bahuguna is also known for coining the Chipko slogan 'ecology is permanent economy'.

The Chipko movement had started in the early 18th century in Rajasthan. A local woman, Amrita Devi, risked her life along with 84 villagers to protect the forest trees from being cut on the order of the king

Today is the 45th Anniversary of the once upon a time famous 'Chipko Movement' also known as the 'Chipko Andolan'. This movement helped in a lot of forest conservation. This movement helped to save the environment with rapid deforestation, helped to increase ecological awareness and helped to reveal the strength of people.

Demand of the villagers to use wood for making agricultural products had been denied by the government.

The original Chipko Movement dates back to the 18 th century and the Bishnoi community belonging to Rajasthan started this movement to protect trees. The king of Jodhpur had given the orders to cut down the trees and this was against the will of the villagers

The movement sparked after the government decided to allot a plot of forest area in the Alaknanda valley to a sports goods company

With the help from a local NGO, the women of the area went into the forest and formed a circle around the trees, protecting them from the men who came to cut down the trees

A lady named Amrita Devi gave up her life while she was in a battle to protect the trees from being cut down. And only after this incident, the king of Jodhpur banned the cutting of trees in the Bishnoi village.

The women kept an all-night vigil, guarding their trees until all of them left

By then, the news of this movement have had spread to nearby villages and more people joined in

The movement was triggered in the year 1963, where Uttar Pradesh faced the China border conflict. The forests were being invaded by the Chinese army as they were rich in minerals and were seen as a major infrastructural development.

The success achieved by this protest led to similar protests in other parts of the country

Dhoom Singh Negi, Bachni Devi and many other village women were the first to save trees by hugging them.

In the year 1973, in Uttar Pradesh's Chamoli District, the first ever famous Chipko Movement was made. It was a non-violent agitation again the cutting down of trees.

They even coined the slogan 'What do the forests bear? Soil, water and pure air'

Chipko movement, also called Chipko andolan, nonviolent social and ecological movement by rural villagers, particularly women, in India in the 1970s, aimed at protecting trees and forests slated for government-backed logging.

Later on, this movement was remembered as the collective gathering of women and children to save the forest and protect its wildlife. The term 'Chipko' means to 'embrace' and under this movement, the villagers came together and formed a circle around the tree as though hugging the tree and saving its life.
