The population of the country is predicted to grow to around 1.69 billion people by 2050.

The National Institute of Open Schooling provides distance education to students at the secondary and higher secondary level. The Indira Gandhi National Open University provides distance education at the higher education level through its 53 regional and 1400 study centers.

Education is administered both in schools or two-year junior colleges which are often affiliated with degree granting universities or colleges.

Curriculum for the Higher Secondary Certificate Examination is determined by the boards of secondary education of which there are 31.

Only 25% of the higher education age group were enrolled in higher education in India as of 2013, in comparison to the UK or France where the number is around 60% or Brazil, another BRICS country, where the rate was around 36% in 2009.

Although the HSCE is the most common Standard XII examination, the All India Senior School Certificate (CBSE), Indian School Certificate, Certificate of Vocational Education (CISCE), Senior Secondary Certification (NIOS), Intermediate Certificate and the Pre-University Certificate are also offered.

India has a very high level of poverty, with 69% of the population living on £2 a day. Currently the Indian middle-class makes up 5% of the population, however, it’s predicted that this will grow rapidly in the next two decades.
