BMW was not always known as BMW.

BMW has far reaching roots, dating as far back as the early 20th century. 

The company began as Rapp Motorenwerke, only to change to Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH (BMW) in 1916.

However, just because the company had been around did not mean they were the automobile super power we know BMW as today.

The company mostly specialized in aircraft engines as well as industrial engines.

BMW first built a car under license in 1928, a full 12 years after it became known as BMW.

This shifted the focus of BMW to cars, and over the successive years BMW has worked tirelessly to create the amazing vehicle BMW is know as today.

BMW's first car was built under licence in 1928, 12 years after Rapp Motorenwerke became Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH.

The German company’s production plants were bombed heavily during the Second World War and it was then banned from vehicle production until 1947.

After re-starting production the company went from strength to strength, buying Land Rover and Mini in 1994 and releasing its first SUV, the BMW X5, in 1999.

A stand-out company in today's car market, BMW released the electric i3 in 2013 and will add more radical concept cars to the collection going into 2017.

BME was initially known as Rapp Motors. The company was also a key company when the Bayerische Flugzeugwerke was formed. However, the founder of Rapp Motors left the company when it was renamed as BMW.

Contrary to believes that the logo of BMW resembles a propeller logo in sync with its early engine making origin for airplanes, motorbikes and also the brakes for trains, it is actually color coordinated with the flag of Bavaria.

Red Baron, the legendary fighter plane pilot loved the technology of the engines that BMW built during the WWI. He even termed the engines to be the "greatest engine in WWI."

Over the last 100 years, BMW has transformed from a struggling airplane engine company to being the manufacturer of some of the most highly coveted luxury vehicles in the world.

The four-cylinder building of the BMW's headquarters in Munich pays tribute to the legacy of the company that had four cylinders during the 1960s. It was designed by an Austrian architecture professor.

The company has witnessed some of the darkest times in European history but has emerged as a strong, stable representative of quality German design and engineering.
