Delhi Metro operates over 2,700 trips daily, starting at around 05:00 and ending at 23:30 hrs. In 2017-18, the Delhi Metro had an average daily ridership of 2.53 million passengers and a cumulative ridership of 0.926 billion passengers yearly.

Construction started in 1998, and the first section, on the Red Line, opened in 2002. The development of the network was divided into phases, Phase I containing 3 lines was completed by 2006, and Phase II in 2011

Delhi metro has its own share of vices, it is overcrowded, swarming with pick-pockets, and experiences technical glitches every once in a while.

Phase III is currently under construction, and is scheduled to be mostly complete by 2019. Phase IV having received approval, construction is expected to start in 2019.

DMRC employees union, Mahaveer Prasad, was recently quoted saying that employees are stuck in the same pay scale from 10 years. Earlier, a promotion was given to metro employees in every 5 years, subject to satisfactory service record, he said.

Recently, the Outcome Budget of Delhi stated that Delhi Metro’s target ridership was 30 lakh per day in 2017-18, but it came down to 25.7 lakh after the dual and consecutive 100 percent fare hikes affected by the Fare Fixation Committee of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in May and October last year.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC), a company with equal equity participation from the Government of India and the Government of Delhi, built and operates the Delhi Metro. DMRC was certified by the United Nations in 2011 as the first metro rail and rail-based system in the world to get carbon credits for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reducing carbon emission levels in the city by 630,000 tonnes every year.

Hundreds of thousands of migrants from states both near and far were arriving at Delhi’s doorstep, every year, escaping poverty and persecution back home and in search of jobs and a better life.

But most of them were cast aside by aloof ivory-tower regimes, which have reigned in Delhi for the past 15-20 years, into squalid Unauthorised Colonies and Slums.

What we call power cuts, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) calls them power shifts. The power lapses where lights and AC go off at certain stations are the ‘power shifts’

Over the years, the Delhi Metro evolved as the ride of the underclass of the city primarily due to the fare subsidies which were provided by the government.

You might not have noticed but here are no dustbins anywhere on the stations, apart from those inside the restaurants. However, the DMRC stations and platforms still always manage to look and stay clean.

In 2014, 12 years after the first line was opened, it was estimated that the Delhi Metro had kept 2,30,000 vehicles off the road, resulting in the saving of roughly Rs 104 billion worth of fuel.

Delhi has also reported a lower number in road accidents overall, which is directly correlated with the metro. The Delhi Police stated that fatal traffic accidents in 2016 amounted to 1548, a reduction of 23 percent when compared to the 2,015 fatal accidents that had occurred in 2008.

Delhi Metro platforms and stations are constructed in such a way that blind people can easily walk on it without any assistance.

Clearly, fixing the Metro cannot mean a fare hike. That would destroy the very sui-generis of the Metro’s existence — an affordable and comfortable ride for the city’s working class — already evidenced by the continuously reducing ridership numbers.

Delhi Metro would be fully subjected to market forces and assuming zero market distortions, Adam Smith’s invisible hand of the market would give rise to optimal public transport supply.

Fare Hike(s) would help the DMRC in raising significant amount of capital which can be re-invested in capital and operational assets in order to provide better service.
