Formerly known as Delhi Transport Service, it was formed by the Indian Government for local bus service as the then service provider Gwalior and Northern India Transport Company Ltd was providing inadequate services.

Delhi has significant reliance on its transport infrastructure. The city has developed a highly efficient public transport system with the introduction of the Delhi Metro,[1] which is undergoing a rapid modernization and expansion as of 2006

In the year 1950, it was reconstituted as ‘Delhi Road Transport Authority’ under the Road Transport Corporation Act. It became an undertaking of Municipal Corporation of Delhi in April 1958 and of the Indian government in 1971. Finally, in November 1971, the Delhi Transportation Corporation was transferred to the Government of National Capital Territory, Delhi.

Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) operates the world's largest fleet of CNG-powered buses. After Pune, Delhi was the second city in India to have an operational Bus rapid transit (BRT) system.

For small distances or big, DTC buses are the most inexpensive means of commuting. The tickets for the A/C buses are priced at maximum 25 INR and non A/C buses at 15 INR.

Delhi is well connected by bus and even though it is a cheap means of transport, buses can get very crowded, especially during peak hours. Most buses are government run and are operated by the DTC (Delhi Transport Corporation) and are either red (air-conditioned) or green (non air-conditioned). Bus routes are not properly displayed at bus stops and the best way to find your way around is to check the route online or by asking people.

A fact that very few people know about is that the orange buses operating across the NCR are not owned by the DTC. They are privately owned by Delhi Transit Corporation.
