As one of the greatest Babylonian inventions, the Code of Hammurabi even today is used as the foundation of several laws and regulations across the world.

SOME DOUBT THE VERY EXISTENCE OF THE HANGING GARDENS OF BABYLON
Perhaps the most famous feature of the Babylonian civilization is the structure known as the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. They were considered as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

According to the Old Testament story, humans tried to build a tower to reach the heavens.

The Babylonian military used to comprise of well-trained soldiers.

When God saw this, he destroyed the tower and scattered mankind across the Earth, making them speak many languages so they could no longer understand each other.

The Hanging Gardens have been described as an ascending series of tiered gardens containing a wide variety of trees, shrubs and vines. The were said to have looked like a large green mountain constructed of mud bricks. Considered a remarkable feat of engineering, the Hanging Gardens are said to have been built during the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar II of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, who ruled from 605 BC to 562 BC.

The administrative unit of seniors from the upper-class people served as judges also known as “amelu”. The decisions they made were mostly influenced by the Code of Hammurabi.

They adopted the customs of the Babylonian culture and it appears that they were accepted by the native Babylonian population. Among the cultural elements they introduced to the state were large-scale horse breeding and improved technology for chariots and harnesses

Some scholars believe the legendary Tower of Babel may have been inspired by a real-life temple, or ziggurat, built to honor Marduk, the patron god of Babylon.

Babylon was a key kingdom in ancient Mesopotamia from the 18th to 6th centuries BC. The city was built on the Euphrates river and divided in equal parts along its left and right banks, with steep embankments to contain the river's seasonal floods. Babylon was originally a small Akkadian town dating from the period of the Akkadian Empire c. 2300 BC

However, as there is no physical evidence of the Hanging Gardens, there are several historians who doubt their existence; and others who think that they were not located in Babylon and their description in ancient Greco-Roman texts is instead a romantic idealization of an eastern garden.

The Babylonians were very good in record-keeping. They used to record all the verdicts from the judges for the future references.

Art and architecture flourished throughout the Babylonian Empire, especially in the capital city of Babylon, which is also famous for its impenetrable walls.

The town became part of a small independent city-state with the rise of the First Babylonian dynasty in the 14th century BC

Babylon was renamed Kardunias during their reign. It continued to be the capital of the kingdom and one of the holy cities. However, the Babylonian kingdom was relatively weak and under constant threat from the Mesopotamian kingdoms of Assyria and Elam.

Babylonia was a very liberal place for the women. Unlike other societies, the Babylonian culture allowed their women to be priests. What’s more, women were even free to sell wine and set up their very own business.

Hammurabi first encircled the city with walls. Nebuchadnezzar II further fortified the city with three rings of walls that were 40 feet tall.

It was also, at times, under their domination. Most of Babylonia was ultimately conquered by the Elam civilization in 1158 BC bringing an end to the Kassite Dynasty.

A Babylonian woman could ask her husband to support for her life. She could also ask for a dowry from her father. In addition, she even had the rights to the properties of her husband after his death.

After the Amorite king Hammurabi created a short-lived empire in the 18th century BC, he built Babylon up into a major city and declared himself its king, and southern Mesopotamia became known as Babylonia and Babylon eclipsed Nippur as its holy city

Nonetheless, most people believe in the existence of the Hanging Gardens. It is not known how they were destroyed. There is a theory by which they were demolished during the sacking of Babylon by Assyrian king Sennacherib.

The Greek historian Herodotus wrote that the walls of Babylon were so thick that chariot races were held on top of them.

The Babylonian history shows that they worshipped Sumerian gods and goddesses. Marduk was their greatest god.

The empire waned under Hammurabi's son Samsu-iluna and Babylon spent long periods under Assyrian, Kassite and Elamite domination.

The city inside the walls occupied an area of 200 square miles, roughly the size of Chicago today.
