Homo is the human genus, which also includes Neanderthals and many other extinct species of hominid. H. sapiens is the only surviving species of the genus Homo.

Originating in Africa somewhere around 200,000 years ago, and adventuring beyond that initial continent from at least 55,000 years ago, with our characteristically slender skeletons and big heads, one would think the story is quite clear cut.

Modern humans are sometimes called "anatomically modern humans". Homo sapiens considers itself the most influential species on the planet. However, many kinds of life, especially plants and protists, have had a much greater effect on the air, the rocks, life, and natural environment on Earth.

Scavenger Sapiens
Early humans didn’t really have the hunting skills that we imagine they did. Instead of going directly after large prey, many groups of these prehistoric humans waited until another predator took down a large animal, and then went in afterward to scavenge the remains.

However, there is more than one way to define a species - for instance, not just biologically but also based on morphological features or on DNA - and modern humans are still evolving and changing.

Erecting Diaspora
It was over one million years ago now that early human beings actually left Africa, as Homo erectus, and started the prehistoric human diaspora. This seems like a long time to us, but remember kids, that is only a blip on our scale of time.

The hypothesis that humans have a single origin was published in Charles Darwin's The Descent of Man (1871).

Our brain size, for instance, has actually shrunk over the past 20,000 years (some people’s a bit more than others). Genetically, we are not a 100% Homo sapiens only: non-African humans have on average around 2% Neanderthal DNA, and we are also known to have interbred with at least one other, now-extinct human species: the Denisovans.

Animalistic Sex
Whether or not humans actually engaged in bestiality is up for debate (seeing as there weren’t cameras back then), but there certainly is enough prehistoric art displaying bestiality to show that they at least considered it.

The concept is supported by a study of present-day mitochondrial DNA, and with evidence based on physical anthropology of fossil humans.

Modern humans spread across the far reaches of the globe, and developed technologies and culture eventually showing symbolic thought by at least 40,000 years ago. From a long existence as hunter-gatherers, the eventual switch to agriculture helped shape the world as we know it today with towns, cities, and an increasingly large population that is now threatening to burst out of the planet’s seams.

Cancerous
Bone cancer has been found in the early human species of Homo Kanamensis. The remains were found in Kenya by one of the world’s leading paleoanthropologists, Louis Leakey, and scientists were surprised to find a lump left by a tumor on the jaw. People tend to think of cancer as a modern disease, but it’s been with humanity from the beginning.

A Healthy Diet
Like (many) humans today, prehistoric humans consumed a balanced omnivore diet consisting of meat and vegetables. They even had specific cutlery tools for meat and others tools for plants. That’s right—even in the prehistoric world you still had to worry about salad forks.

According to genetic and fossil evidence, older versions of Homo sapiens evolved only in Africa, between 200,000 and 100,000 years ago, with members of one branch leaving Africa by 90,000 years ago and over time replacing earlier human populations such as Neanderthals and Homo erectus.

Sequencing of the full Neanderthal genome suggests Neanderthals and some modern humans share some ancient genetic lineages.

Climate Stirs Innovation
The climate on earth goes through periods of change and being able to survive these changes is key to survival. Prehistoric humans were well aware of this and the fossil records show that whenever there was a change in climate, there would be a burst of technological innovation in order to prepare for the shifts.

Dental Records
Living on a pre-agricultural, prehistoric diet meant that there were fewer sugars and carbohydrates to affect people’s teeth. This means that prehistoric humans actually had healthier teeth than modern humans do and little need for all the dental work we have done now

The authors of the study suggest that their findings are consistent with Neanderthal admixture of up to 4% in some populations. The reason for this admixture is not known

Just a Little High
It seems that inhaling smoke has been the way to do drugs since drugs became a thing. Early evidence shows that prehistoric humans would inhale hallucinogenic fumes through bowls and tubes in order to enter into spiritual trances. Like, far out man!

In August 2012, a study suggested that the DNA overlap is a remnant of a common ancestor of both Neanderthals and modern humans

Partying with Friends
It wasn’t just drugs that prehistoric peoples were doing—they were also drinking. A site dating back to 11,000 years ago in Cyprus has been uncovered, which was used as a ceremonial site… and as a brewery. In fact, evidence suggests that the function of beer was used just as it is today by most—as a social lubricant.

I think the problem is in how the question is asked. By “adjust to modern western society” implies about the same as bringing a puppy or kitten from a particularly isolated and under-devloped region, and taking it to a modern major metropolitan area. Yeah, sure, the animals will ‘adjust’, and so would the baby.
