Pangong lake is the highest salt lake in India. Pangong Tso lake is situated at a height of about 14,270 feet from sea level .It is 134 km long and extends from India to Tibet.60% of the length of the lake lies in Tibet. Despite being salt water lake ,in winter it freezes completely. The lake acts as breeding ground for variety of birds including many migratory birds. This fact about the pangong lake is the most amazing fact about Leh – Ladakh region.

The Indian Astronomical center (I.A.O) located near Leh in Ladakh ,India, has one of the world’s highest sites for optical, in framed and Gamma ray Telescopes The Indian Astronomical Observatory stands on Mt. Saraswati, Digpa-ratsa Ri, Hanle, in south-eastern Ladakh. It is operated by Indian institute of Astrophysics ,Bangalore .It is currently the third highest Optical telescope in the world ,situated at an elevation of 4,500 meters. It is a must visit place for science enthusiasts. During the daytime you can visit inside the observatory.

Ladakh has great diversity of birds, both resident and migratory birds. Some 225 different species of birds have been recorded in Ladakh . Here one can find Chukor Patridge,Kestrel,Himalayan Griffin Vultures,Golden Eagle and Himalayan Snow cock. Many birds migrate from warmer parts of India to spend the summer in Ladakh. The Khardung La Pass in Ladakh is known as highest motor able road in the world. This pass on the Ladakh range lies north of Leh and is gateway to the Shyok and Nubra valleys. The locals say that is just an optical illusion in a way that the path that looks like an uphill road is actually a slant running downhill, but due to the natural formation of the mountains, the horizon is distracted and our minds and eyes consider it to be an uphill stretched road.

After Rangdum, the valley sees an elevation of 4,400 meters at Pensi La, which is the gateway to Zanskar Valley. Farming limit is up to Korzok while on Tso Moriri Lake, which is at an altitude of 4,600 meters, there are the highest fields in the world.

One can easily find ancient Buddhist rock engravings, even in  Muslim dominated areas, in Ladakh. The culture of the region is clearly revealed by the monasteries that can be seen in almost every village. These monasteries (gompas) can be huge complexes with a number of shrines, prayer halls, etc. or tiny hermitages with only a single image.

Pangong Tso is a Tibetan word, which means high grassland lake. It is located at an altitude of 4,350 meters in Himalayas and is an endorheic lake. During winter season, the lake freezes despite being the salty water.

The Dards - people of Indo-Aryan race from down the Indus - are supposed to be the original inhabitants of Ladakh, but the place came under Buddhist influence in the 7th century. Ladakh is dominated by Buddhists with a small percentage of Hindu, Muslims and Christians. In Kargil, Suru Valley, and the nearby areas, the population is predominantly Baltis as the area was part of Baltistan until 1947. With a diversity in every aspect, the people of Ladakh are dissimilar from the rest of India in their culture, physical appearance etc.

A royal palace with a huge collection of treasures such as Jewellery, ornaments, ceremonial dresses and crowns which are still intact and kept in the museum of the palace has been converted into one of the restored sights of Archaeological survey of India.
