1.) Cruise Missile: These types of missiles are smaller in size and and lesser in range(50–450 kms). These follow a terrain hugging path or go parallel to the ground(some of them go for a steep dive of 90° before hitting). While Cruise missiles are mostly armed with Conventional Warhead, some of them can also be armed with Nuclear Warheads.

Ballistic Missile: Use of these kind of missiles very likely mean that WW3 is about to get on your shoulders. Because these are always Nuclear Armed. They follow a Ballistic path towards their target. And more worse, while some of these(Tactical Ballestic Missile) travel lesser distances(60kms), some of these(Inter Continental Ballistic Missile/ICBM) travel astonishing distances(12000–13000kms). While Anti Ballistic Missile Defence systems can intercept these missiles by firing missiles of their own, ICBMs have evolved and they take several Small warheads instead of a Big one and these warheads seperate during the terminal phase of its flight and hit several areas with superior precision. The Russian ICBM SATAN 2 is so big, that it can literally WIPE OUT whole BRITAIN.

Surface to Air Missile : These missiles carry Conventional Warheads and are fired from Ground towards Aerial Targets.

Air to Air Missile : These missiles are fired by Fighter Jets to destroy other Fighter Jets. They also carry Conventional Warheads.

The general configuration of a missile consists in a cylindrical body with an ogival warhead and surfaces with aerodynamic control . Missiles also have guiding system and are powered by an engine ,generally either a type of rocket or jet engine .

A ballistic missile is a missile that follows a sub orbital ballistic flight path with the objective to a predetermined target. The missile is only guided during the relatively brief initial powered phase of flight.

Attending at the target ,Missiles can be classified as anti-submarine , anti-aircraft, anti-missile ,anti -tank ,anti -radar etc. If we look at the military military function ,Missiles can be classified as strategic and tactical . However the most extended criteria is as follows :

it should be understood that , all destruction is done by warhead , missile only deliver that warhead to the required target . We can use different types of warheads , single or multiple warheads on same missile as required .

in simple terms, anything that possesses the ability to be thrown or shot at a target, either by bare hands or by means of another mechanism, is called a missile.

Any dictionary that we pick for browsing, would delineate a missile as a self-exploding object that blasts when it hits the desired target.

Missiles vary from small tactical weapons that are effective out to only a few hundred feet to much larger strategic weapons that have ranges of several thousand miles.

Almost all missiles contain some form of guidance and control mechanism and are therefore often referred to as guided missiles.

In a metaphor or a simile, the word missile can be used as a substitute for any other object thrown or shot or hurled.

An unguided military missile, as well as any launch vehicle used to sound the upper atmosphere or place a satellite in space, is usually referred to as a rocket.

A propeller-driven underwater missile is called a torpedo, and a guided missile powered along a low, level flight path by an air-breathing jet engine is called a cruise missile.

Missiles. Airborne missiles were experimented with in World War I and used extensively in World War II. Since then a wide variety of airborne missiles have been tested in combat many times.

Although missiles can be propelled by either liquid-fueled or solid-fueled rocket engines, solid fuel is preferred for military uses because it is less likely to explode and can be kept ready-loaded for quick launch. Such engines commonly propel tactical guided missiles—i.e., missiles intended for use within the immediate battle area—toward their targets at twice the speed of sound. Strategic missiles (weapons designed to strike targets far beyond the battle area) are either of the cruise or ballistic type.
