What is Washing Machine and how does it work ?

The programmer opens the water valves again so clean water enters the drums.

Thermostat and heating element. These control the temperature of the water and heats up the water to the specified temperature.

The programmer makes the inner drum rotate back and forth so the clean water rinses the clothes. It empties both drums and repeats this process several times to get rid of all the soap.

The washing machine operates by a motor, which is connected to the agitator through a unit called a transmission. The motor and transmission are near the bottom of the machine, while the agitator extends up through the middle of the machine.

Pump. This removes the water from the drum after the wash.

When the clothes are rinsed, the programmer makes the inner drum rotate at really high speed—around 80 mph (130 km/h).

The transmission is similar to the transmission in your automobile in that it changes the speed and direction of the agitator. In one direction (agitate), the transmission changes the rotation of the agitator and spin tub—the inside tub with small holes in it—into a back-and-forth motion. When the motor is reversed by the controls (spin), the transmission locks up and the agitator, transmission, and spin tub all rotate as a unit.

Programmer. This controls the washing machine through all the steps from washing to rinsing and spin drying.

The clothes are flung against the outside edge of the inner drum, but the water they contain is small enough to pass through the drum's tiny holes into the outer drum. Spinning gets your clothes dry using the same idea as a centrifuge.

Without the transmission changing the speed or direction, the unit uses centrifugal force to remove as much water from the clothes as possible. The motor is also connected to a pump. When the motor is moving in the spin direction, the pump removes the water from the tub and discards it through the drain pipe.

Pipes and valves. These allow the water in and out of the washer.

The pump removes any remaining water from the outer drum and the wash cycle comes to an end.

Models designed for use in other countries offer different features. One component required on all models sold in England (and possibly soon in the rest of Europe) is called the lid lock. Normally when the lid is raised the washer must stop for safety reasons. However, in England, when the washer is operating the lid must be locked closed.

Programs, such as delicate wash, colour wash or pre-soak, are one of the features of washing machines, particularly fully-automatic washing machines, which gives you the choice when it comes to how you want to wash your clothes. If you need a certain temperature or you’re washing with a certain fabric, then programs help you find the optimal washing conditions for your laundry needs from selecting the right wash temperature to setting up your washing timing.

Scholars and many others have long acknowledged the significant role washing machines played in the fight for women’s rights. The invention of automatic washing machines reduced the amount of time women spent doing household chores, which allowed them more time to enter the workforce.

There are many washing machines out there, and the one you choose really depends on your uses for a washing machine, as well as factors such as cost and convenience. A fully-automatic washing machine, like the name says, does everything automatically at the push of a button. A semi-automatic washing machine may be a step up from hand washing, but you may need to do some of the process yourself, like move the wet clothes into the spin dryer.

Many parts of a washing machine are manufactured from sheet steel, usually coated with zinc to improve rust resistance. The steel manufacturer supplies the metal in a coil, which allows the material to be cut to size with minimum waste or automatically fed into the forming process.

Account for a Shocking Amount of Water Usage At one point in time, washing machines were responsible for approximately 22% of the water usage in an average household. As there have been technological advancements, this number has likely shifted. However, washing machines still use a lot more water than most believe, which is why it is important to ensure you do full loads and remain economical with your washing habits.

On some models made by Speed Queen, the spin tub is made of stainless steel. All other models use a steel (called enameling iron) designed for a porcelain coating. For the wash tub, which isn't visible unless you open the machine cabinet, enameling iron with a porcelain coating is generally used. Whirlpool is the exception, using plastic instead of enameling iron for the outer wash tub.

One of the things to know about washing machines is that when it comes to fully-automatic washing machines you get two types of washing machine – one that opens from the top, called a top load washing machine, and one that opens from the side, a front load washing machine. Both machines carry their own washing machine features, along with their pros and cons.

Your machine doesn't know what you put into it and can't automatically tell how carefully to wash something like a delicate woollen jumper—because it doesn't know that's what it's got to do!
