The Oldest Regiment in Indian Army is the President’s Bodyguard and was set up in 1773. All Soldiers of President’s Bodyguards are trained Paratroopers.

Indian Army has never been involved in a military coup nor initiated the first attack in any warfare.

There is an base of Indian Air Force in Tajikistan. That is currently the only outstation base but India is looking for another one in Afghanistan.

Indian Army has a horse Regiment in the Armoured Corps called the Poona Horse Regiment and it is amongst the last 3 such existing regiment in the world.  This tank regiment took part in the 1948 Hyderabad operation and 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars and has recently completed 200 years of an epic journey this year.

In the Battle of Longewala, fought between India and Pakistan in December 1971, on which the famous Bollywood movie “Border” is based, there were only two casualties on the Indian side: 120 Indian Soldiers with 1 jeep mounted M40 recoilless rifle held the fort against 2000 Pakistani soldiers backed by 45 tanks and 1 mobile infantry brigade. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Indian soldiers held their ground throughout the night and with the help of the Air Force, were able to completely beat the enemies.

The Bailey Bridge – world’s highest bridge is actually built by Indian Army. It is located between the Suru and Dras rivers in Ladakh Valley in Himalayan Mountains. The bridge was built back in 1982.

Operation Rahat (2013) was one of the biggest civilian rescue operations ever carried out in the world: Carried out by the Indian Air Force to evacuate civilians affected by the floods in Uttarakhand in 2013.

World’s biggest ever civilian rescue was carried out by Indian Armed Forces. It was known as Operation Rahat and was organized in 2013. The operation was actually carried out by Indian Air Force after the Uttarakhand flood. The Battle of Saragarhi is yet another example of valor of Indian Army. Fought in 1897 on 12th of September, it was a battle fought between 21 Sikh soldiers against 10,000 Afghan soldiers. Afghans lost 180 soldiers while all 21 Sikhs died on battlefield. It was one of the greatest last stands in history.

To name a few, the Khardungla Pass (the highest motorable road in the world), the Magnetic Hill in Leh, etc.

The highest military honor in India is the Param Veer Chakra. 21 Indian soldiers have received Param Veer Chakra till date among which 14 received the award posthumously.

At the age of 19, The Royal Indian Army’s Sepoy Kamal Ram received the Victoia Cross, the highest award of the United Kingdom, for valor after World War 2. He was the youngest Indian to receive the award.

The only war lost by Indian Army was in 1962 when India fought China. The loss was not a result of negligence on part of the Indian Army. It was rather the defense minister and PM who made mistakes in an attempt to micromanage the war using political routes.

The Oldest Para-Military Force of the Indian Armed Forces is the Assam Regiment that was formed in the year 1835.
