It means “the Hill Fort of Jaisal”.The Jaisalmer city is known for its old mansions, better known as Havelis. Places to visit in the city are Jaisalmer Fort, Camel Safari, Desert National Park, Pokran, Desert Cultural Center, Patwon ki Haveli etc. To come to Jaisalmer and enjoy the traditional rhetoric of ‘padharomahare desh’ (welcome to our lands).

Jaipur is also popularly known as the “Pink City”, is the capital of the state. The Amber Fort, Jantar Mantar – the observatory, Hawa Mahal, Sisodia Rani Ka Bagh, the City Palace, Albert Hall, the Jal Mahal, the Amer Fort, B M Birla Planetarium, Galtaji, the Laxmi Narayan Temple, are some of the architectural splendours of Jaipur. Tourists stack their bags with wonderful Jaipuri textiles and artefacts as well.

Bikaner houses the celebrated Deshnokh Temple, the abode of the sacred white mouse, that ushers good fortune. It is dotted with relics of the glorious yesteryears and is also the seat of several holy shrines.

The Junagarh Fort, the Raj Ratan Bihari and Rasik Shiromani Temple, the Laxminath Temple, the Bhandasar Jain Temple and the Ganga Golden Jubilee Museum, are among the famed tourist destinations.

Ajmer is most famous for Khwaja Mu’in-ud-Din Chisti Dargah. Other places are Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra, Lake Foy Sagar, Mayo College, Ana Sagar Lake, etc.

Pushkar – Located at a distance of 14 kilometres from Ajmer, draws tourists in hordes during the famous Pushkar Fair. The Brahma Temple is yet another tourist haunt of Pushkar.

Almost every city in Rajasthan is colour coordinated. Jaipur is pink, Udaipur is white, Jodhpur is blue and Jhalawar is purple!

We assume that Rajasthan is all about sand. But that’s not true. In some parts, you won’t be able to spot a single speck of a desert. There are dense green pastures in the middle of nowhere.

The terrain and the sky change their colours swiftly as if a painter is rushing to complete a majestic multi-hued painting.

The huge DDLJ type fields in the middle of the state will make you wonder whether you’re in Punjab or a hill station.

On most streets, there are more cows, elephants and camels than people!

The mystic Saraswati River, one of the main ancient rivers revered by the Hindus, is believed to have disappeared under the sands of the Thar Desert, due to the emergence of the Aravali range of mountains.

The Aravalis are the oldest mountain range in India, even older than the Himalayas.

Rajasthan has had a glorious history. It is known for many brave kings, their deeds; and their interest in art and architecture. Its name means “the land of the rajas”.

It was also called Rajputana (the country of the Rajputs), whose codes of chivalry shaped social mores just as their often bitter and protracted feuding dominated their politics. From this same sandy tract the world heard the bangs of India’s nuclear test program—first during the regime of Mrs.

Indira Gandhi and, quite recently, when Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee joined as Prime Minister.

The nuclear blast that caused a world-hauling polarisation of leading nations, was made in an insipid belt of Rajasthan known as Pokhran.

Also famous for its painted mud Potteries, Pokhran has become the recent sanatorium of India associated with the pride of its people.

Such is Rajasthan, the land of Rajput warriors—bold and beauteous, simple and yet difficult, welcoming and yet self-conscious, full of valour and full of romance.

In its diversity lie around the Great Indian Desert, mountain ranges, lakes, dense forests, lush green valleys, barren fields and attractive oases.

Spread in  a vast stretch of 342,214 sq. km Rajasthan is the largest state of India with a population over 45 million. In most parts the climate

is dry.
