Who was King Bhoja ?

His army was commanded by Raja Durlabh Ram and contained a large force led by his uncle by marriage, Mir Jafar Khan. Both these generals were proposing to betray Siraj-ud-Daulah.
Clive and the Company Committee in Calcutta chose to take the presence of Siraj-ud-Daulah’s army at Plassey as a direct threat to Calcutta.

You must be very hungry. Please take as much corn you want and also drink, as much water you want.”

The verse described how great kings like Mandhata, Rama and Yudhishthira died leaving behind all their property; it then sarcastically added that Munja would be the only one whom the earthly possessions would follow.

Then king Bhoja realized that Saravana Bhatta was completely changing, once he climbs on the platform. He called Saravana Bhatta and told him, “Dear Brahmin, I want to buy this corn field.

The verse moved Munja to tears, and made him realize his mistake. When he learned that Bhoja was still alive, he invited Bhoja to back to his court.

During this time Clive negotiated a treaty, through the intermediary William Watts, with Mir Jafar Khan, whereby the English would assist Mir Jafar Khan in obtaining the Nawabship of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa, in exchange for substantial payments to the Company and its various officers. Many of Siraj-ud-Daulah’s senior officers were in support of Mir Jafar Khan in this conspiracy.

I would give you ten times its price. “Saravana Bhatta happily accepted the price, gave the land to the king and went away.

To repent for his sin, he also went on a pilgrimage to Dharmaranya, where he established a town called Munjapuram.

Under the treaty Mir Jafar Khan undertook to change sides during any hostilities.

During the standoff between Siraj-ud-Daulah and the Company authorities a letter arrived in Calcutta from the Mahratta Chieftain at Berar, proposing that he should invade Bengal with an army of 120,000 men and fight Siraj-ud-Daulah in alliance with the English.

The king asked his army to dig at the spot, where the platform was there .After some time they found there a majestic golden throne with 32 golden steps.

The sarcastic verse, purportedly written by Bhoja to Munja, also appears as an antonymous extract in Sharngadhara-paddhati (1363 CE).

On each step , there was a golden doll. King Bhoja became extremely happy and wanted to take the throne to his palace.

Clive suspected, wrongly, that this letter was a forgery sent on behalf of Siraj-ud-Daulah to establish what the English intentions were towards him. Acting on that assumption Clive sent the letter to the Nawab. Siraj-ud-Daulah was appalled at the threat of such an invasion and recalled his army to defend Murshidabad.

These stories of Bhoja's persecution by Munja are essentially mythical. This legend is not found in the works composed by the contemporaries of Munja, Sindhuraja and Bhoja

On 12th June 1757 the remaining troops at Calcutta with 150 sailors from Admiral Watson’s squadron marched to join Clive’s force at Chandranagar.

For example, the Nava-Sahasanka-Charita makes no mention of this story. The legend appears to be the poetic imagination of later composers.

Ain-i-Akbari also contains a variation of this account, but completely distorts the legend, naming Munja as the one who was persecuted by Bhoja. This account is also completely unreliable from a historical point of view

But in spite of great efforts, they were not able to move the throne even a little bit from that place. Then he called his wise minister and asked him, “Dear Sir, Why am I not able to move this throne to my palace?

Clive now had 950 European Troops (including 250 men from His Majesty’s 39th Foot), 2,100 sepoys, 100 artillerymen, 60 sailors and eight 6 pounder guns and 2 howitzers.

The minister replied, “Sir, It looks that this throne belonged to a great king. This has been here for a very long time. So you have to worship to the throne before moving it.”

Some literary works suggest that Bhoja succeeded his uncle Munja as the Paramara king.

The king sent for his priests and a proper worship was done to the throne. Then they were able to move it. They then got the throne cleaned and placed it in the chamber of the king.

Clive marched out of Chandranagar on 13th June 1757, leaving a garrison of 100 men. Arriving on 16th June at Palti, Clive sent Major Eyre Coote of the 39th Foot with a small force to take the post of Katwa, containing a native garrison and a considerable quantity of supplies. The garrison surrendered to Coote after a token resistance.

The king wanted to sit on the throne and rule his country.
