Tell about Alexander The Great ?

Alexander commemorated his conquests by founding dozens of cities (usually built up around previous military forts), which he invariably named Alexandria. The most famous of these, founded at the mouth of the Nile in 331 B.C., is today Egypt’s second-largest city.

Like many details of his death, how Alexander’s body was preserved during the time before his transfer to Egypt is one of speculation, but in 1889, E.A. Wallis Badge put forth the idea that he was preserved in a vat of honey.

He was a big drinker
Alexander has a reputation as a big drinker. In one drunken incident he argued with his friend and general Cleitus the Black, and killed him by throwing a javelin into his chest. There are some theories that alcoholism contributed to his early death.

He died aged just 32
Families in ancient times could expect very high child mortality, but noble children who made it to adulthood could easily live into their 50s, or even past their 70s, so Alexander’s death was premature. He died in Babylon in 323 BC.

According to some historical reports, Roxanne, Alexander the Great’s first wife, was possibly the only woman he ever loved.

Near the site of the battle of the river Hydaspes—the costliest victory of his Indian campaign—Alexander founded the city of Bucephala, named for his favorite horse, which was mortally wounded in the battle.

The cause of his death remains a mystery
Alcoholism, wounds, grief, a natural ailment and assassination all circle as theories of how Alexander the Great died. However, there is a lack of reliable evidence on what really happened. Many sources agree that he was bedridden for about a week, possibly with a fever, and died on either 10 or 11 June 323 BC.

While it is generally agreed that Alexander did in fact love Roxanne, it is also believed that he married her in order to unite Greek and Persian cultures. Marriages of that nature were something that Alexander’s father was known to do, and it stands to reason that Alexander would do the same.

After his spectacular capture in 327 B.C. of Sogdian Rock, a seemingly impregnable mountain fortress, the 28-year-old Alexander was surveying his captives when Roxanne, the teenage daughter of a Bactrian nobleman, caught his eye.

His empire collapsed into civil war after his death
With such an array of cultures, and with him not naming a clear heir, Alexander’s vast empire quickly fragmented into warring parties. The Wars of the Successors that followed would last forty years in which many would rise and fall in their attempts for dominance.

Eventually, Alexander’s empire became essentially divided into three parts: the Seleucids in Asia, the Antigonids in Macedonia and the Ptolemies in Egypt.

As a means of recognizing his numerous conquests, Alexander would found cities around his military forts and name them Alexandria. All in all, there were more than 70 cities named Alexandria, the most famous of which is Alexandria in Egypt. Alexandria was founded at the mouth of the Nile river in 331 BC and is the second largest city in Egypt today.

Mystery surrounds the whereabouts of his tomb
Following his death, Alexander’s body was seized by Ptolemy and taken to Egypt, where it was eventually placed in Alexandria. Although his tomb remained a central site of Alexandria for centuries, all literary records of his tomb vanish at the end of the fourth century AD.

Soon after, in a traditional wedding ceremony, the king sliced a loaf of bread in two with his sword and shared it with his new bride. A few months after Alexander’s death, Roxanne gave birth to the couple’s only son, Alexander.

Alexander the Great had an eye condition called heterochromia iridium which means he had two different colored eyes.

Alexander’s legacy still lives on today
Alexander the Great was one of the most influential people in history. His military tactics are still being studied, while he brought Greek culture as far east as modern day Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Alexander the Great was said to be extremely fond of Homer’s Iliad and kept a copy with him all of the time. The book was a gift from his tutor Aristotle, and he read the work on a regular basis

Alexander’s position as King of Macedonia didn’t automatically grant him absolute control of the Corinthian League that his father had founded in Greece. Athens wanted to rule the league, and several other Greek States launched rebellions.

Alexander led his army south and forced Thessaly to recognize him as leader. By fall of 336, he had secured treaties from all of the Greek city-states in the league and was given full military power to conquer Persia.

About a year after Alexander’s return from exile, he got word that the Persian governor was offering his daughter in marriage to his half-brother Philip Arrhidaeus.

He was undefeated in battle and is widely considered one of history’s most successful military commanders.

Before embarking on his Persian Campaign, Alexander set out to secure his Northern borders. In Spring of 335, he took steps to squash the revolts and marched East into the country of the Independent Thracians.

During his youth, Alexander was tutored by Aristotle until the age of 16.

He handily defeated the forces at Mount Haemus and took control. Next they marched into Triballi, and defeated the army there. Finally, he marched for three days into the Danube, and after crossing the river at night in a surprise attack, forced the Getae tribe to retreat after their first battle

After Philip’s assassination in 336 BC, he succeeded his father to the throne and inherited a strong kingdom and an experienced army.
