Facts about Uttarakhand – Uttarakhand, earlier known as Uttaranchal, referred to the “Land of the Gods”. Uttarakhand is a great pilgrimage centre and it is a major destination for Hindu Temples. It came into existence 9th November 2000. Its Official Languages are Hindi and Sanskrit whereas Garhwali, Kumaoni also can be heard in Uttarakhand.

Its Capital City is Dehradun. Its largest city is also Dehradun. Located in the foothills of the Himalayas, the State has international boundaries with China (Tibet) in the north and Nepal in the east. On its north-west lies Himachal Pradesh while on the south is Uttar Pradesh.

Uttarakhand’s name is derived from the Sanskrit words Uttara (उत्तर) meaning ‘north’, and khaṇḍa (खण्ड) meaning ‘land’, altogether simply meaning ‘Northern Land’. The name finds mention in early Hindu scriptures as the combined region of “Kedarkhand” (present day Garhwal) and “Manaskhand” (present-day Kumaon).

There are 13 districts in Uttarakhand which are grouped into two divisions, Kumaon and Garhwal. Four new districts named Didihat, Ranikhet, Kotdwar, and Yamunotri were declared by the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Ramesh Pokhriyal, on 15 August 2011 but yet to be officially formed.

Uttarakhand finds mention in the ancient Hindu scriptures as Kedarkhand, Manaskhand and Himavant. The Kushanas, Kunindas, Kanishka, Samudra Gupta, the Pauravas, Katuris, Palas, the Chandra and Panwars and the British have ruled it in turns.

It is often the Land of Gods (Dev Bhoomi) because of its various holy places and abundant shrines. The hilly regions of Uttarakhand offer pristine landscapes to the tourists.

The State of Uttarakhand was earlier a part of the United Province of Agra and Awad which came into existence in 1902. In 1935, the name of the state was shortened of the United Province.

In January 1950, the United Province was renamed as Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal remained a part of Uttar Pradesh before it was carved out of Uttar Pradesh on 09 November 2000. It is incepted as the 27th State of India.

Jim Corbett National park of Nainital district is oldest national park of India which was established in 1936 for protection of tigers. Rajaji National Park, Gangotri National park, Nalanda Devi National park are some other national parks of this State.

The Emblem of Uttarakhand shows mountain ridge with the flow of holy river Ganga and in the mid of mountain peaks is National emblem of India showing Satyamev Jayate. The state animal of Uttarakhand is Himalayan musk Dear, the state bird is Himalayan Monal, state flower is Brahma Kamal and state tree is Burash.

The two most sacred rivers as per beliefs of hindus Ganga and Yamuna originate from Uttarakhand State. While Ganga originate from Gangotri and Yamuna originates from Yamunotri.

Nanda Devi is the highest peak of Uttarakhand with altitude of 7816 mtr. This also the second highest peak of India after Kangchenjunga. Kamat and Badrinath are second and third highest peaks of Uttarakhand with a height of 7756 and 7138 mtr.

Tehri Dam built on the Bhagirathi River near Tehri Garhwal in is the tallest dam in India and one of the tallest in the world. This dam is a reservoir for irrigation , municipal water supply and generation of 1000 MW of Hydroelectricity . The power from this dam is distributed to Punjab , Delhi , Haryana , Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan etc. The others dams in Uttarakhand are Baigul dam, Koteshwar dam, Bhimtal dam etc.

The state is divided into two parts Garhwal and Kumaon region. In 1891 two districts of kumaon and Tarai were redistributed and renamed after their headquarters Nainital and Almora while In 1969 Garhwal divisons was established and Pauri made its headquarters.
