Tell about Chandragupta Maurya ?

Arthashastra (meaning Economics) was a political treatise of ancient India and is considered to be a precursor of modern world’s Classical Economics.

Chandragupta and Chanakya built alliances and a formidable army of their own first.

After Ashoka the Great, the decline of Maurya Empire started because the emperors that ascended the throne were weak and the Mauryan Empire formally ended in 185 BCE when the then Mauryan Emperor Brihadratha Maurya was murdered by his own commander-in-chief (senapati) Pusyamitra Sunga who established the Sunga Dynasty.

Plutarch does not discuss this conquest, but does estimate that Chandragupta's army would later number 600,000 by the time it had subdued all of India, an estimate also given by Pliny.

The Maurya Empire was India’s first centralized power. The entire empire was divided into districts or administrative zones with hierarchical officials.

These officials were responsible for maintaining army, collecting taxes, implementing irrigation projects and as well as maintaining law and order.

Pliny and Plutarch also estimated the Nanda Army strength in the east as 200,000 infantry, 80,000 cavalry, 8,000 chariots, and 6,000 war elephants. These estimates were based in part of the earlier work of the Seleucid ambassador to the Maurya, Megasthenes.

The Maurya Empire was extremely efficient in administration. Measures and weights were standardized by Chandragupta Maurya and Chanakya.

Chandragupta laid siege to Kusumapura (or Pataliputra, now Patna), the capital of Magadha, with the help of mercenaries from areas already conquered and by deploying guerrilla warfare methods.

If Mauryan administration was worth praising, so was the Mauryan army. The military might of Mauryan Empire was undeniably respectable.
