Which is Salmon Fish ?

During territorial disputes, scientists noticed that the colour of “loser” fish darkened. On further investigation of this, it was found that once the colour of the fish’s body became darker, they faced reduced attacks from the aggressive fish.

Salmon can travel up to 3500 miles to spawn

Young salmon feed on terrestrial and aquatic insects, amphipods, and other crustaceans while young; adults eat primarily other fish and also squid, eels, and shrimp. Unlike all other salmon, the sockeye salmon has a diet that consists almost entirely of plankton.

Salmon's age can be determined by the number of rings on the otolith (structure in the ear).

. It is therefore suggested that darkening of the skin is a form of communication. Through this, the loosing fish is letting the aggressive fish know that they are submissive, which prevents them from being subjected to further attack.

The energy to travel all those miles come from their stored bodyfat.

There are diverse predators of salmon at the varying stages of their lives. Other fish, members of their own species, snakes and birds eat salmon fry. Once in the ocean, salmon are prey to whales, dolphins, seals, sea lions, other fish and, of course, humans. Bears and birds often scoop up spawning salmon.

Salmon can survive 3 to 8 years in the wild, depending on the species.

Well, not quite, but it has been shown that, in hatcheries, chinook salmon will group themselves.

Salmon DO NOT eat while migrating up stream.

Many species of salmon have been introduced into non-native environments such as the Great Lakes of North America and Patagonia in South America.

Some types of Salmon are listed on the endangered list.

The two groups are those that feed on the surface, and those that feed on the bottom of their rearing tank. The fishes within these two groups are distinct, with those that feed at the surface being larger, and having a different body shape to those that feed on the bottom.

Gastronomy does not support the catching of the salmon on this list.

Salmon farming is significant in Chile, Norway, Scotland, Canada and the Faroe Islands; it is the source for most salmon consumed in the United States and Europe.

Whilst this is not something that has yet been researched in Atlantic salmon, it is a good example to show that all fish are not the same. It would be interesting to see whether such behaviour occurs in Atlantic salmon.

Salmon are considered “anadromous” which means they live in both fresh and salt water.

A variant method of fish stocking, called ocean ranching, is under development in Alaska. There, the young salmon are released into the ocean far from any wild salmon streams. When it is time for them to spawn, they return to where they were released, where fishermen can catch them.

Salmon belong to the genus, Onchorhynchus. Steelhead also belong to this genus, but are not considered true salmon.

They are born in freshwater where they spend a few months to a few years (depending on the species) before moving out to the ocean. When it’s time to spawn, they head back to freshwater
