4.) One of the best way to make the most of your time here is to go island hopping (stay in one place for a few days and move elsewhere).

The parrot fish makes a huge contribution to the beauty of the Maldives’ beaches. The corrallite sand is the undigested coral they eat. One adult parrot fish can produce an estimated ton of sand per year!

Even when you book a stay in a resort that has multiple properties on different islands, they tend to recommend trying more than one (e.g. for a 2 week stay, try one for 1 week and another for the 2nd week).

Two seasons dominate the Maldives’ weather: the winter northeastern monsoon season and the rainy southwestern summer monsoon season. The closer to the equator the islands are, the greater is the monsoon influence.

The Maldives is one of the world’s safest travel destinations. This is largely because of the isolation of its island resorts.

It is a tad rainier in certain months but the rain doesn’t always last that long and will leave you with lots of sunshine to enjoy your day.

The people of the Maldives converted to Islam in 1153 A.D. and today it is a strictly Muslim nation.

9.) The peak periods (and hence, the most experience) to visit are December to April. If you’re looking to bag yourself a bargain, try to visit outside of these months.

Like other Muslim countries, the Maldives take their weekend on Friday and Saturday, not Saturday and Sunday as the western countries do.

10.) One of the best ways to snorkel here is with a guide for your initial snorkel session so do try to find out if your resort has guided snorkels before you visit.

The Maldives are ranked the world’s third most endangered nation due to flooding from climate change and global warming.

11.) After you arrive at the airport, you’ll still need to get on a boat or sea plane to get anywhere else.

The 26 December 2004 tsunami resulting from an Indian Ocean floor earthquake caused serious damage to the infrastructures of 57 islands, caused 14 to be totally evacuated, and destroyed six completely. There were 21 resort islands that closed due to serious damage and 108 deaths.
