King feels that the film’s Wendy Torrance was merely a “screaming dish rag” instead of a fleshed-out character, and he didn’t like Jack Nicholson’s portrayal of Jack Torrance.

The author’s photograph on the back of The Giving Tree—depicting a bearded, bald-headed Silverstein glaring at the camera—has gained a reputation of its own. A Chicago Tribune writer called it “demonic” while a writer for NJ.com pointed out his “jagged menacing teeth.” In the children’s book Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw, there’s an entire passage where the main character’s dad uses Silverstein's photo to terrorize his son into staying in bed.

The Giving Tree may be among Silverstein's most successful and recognizable works, but when asked what his favorite pieces of his writing were in a 1975 Publisher’s Weekly interview, he left it off the list. “I like Uncle Shelby's ABZ, A Giraffe and a Half, and Lafcadio, The Lion Who Shot Back—I think I like that one the most," the author said. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t proud of the book that helped launch his career. On the book’s popularity, he said "What I do is good ... I wouldn't let it out if I didn't think it was."

Even though he writes scary stories, King is still afraid of flying, and will often drive his motorcycle from state to state during his book tours.

In case The Giving Tree doesn’t make it clear enough, Silverstein stated in an 1978 interview that he detests happy endings. He told The New York Times Book Review that he believed cheery conclusions “create an alienation” in young readers.

King’s son Joe Hillstrom King wanted to become a horror writer too, and decided to go by the pen name of Joe Hill so as not to be given preferential or biased treatment. Hill’s novel Horns was adapted into a movie starring Daniel Radcliffe in 2013.

Stephen King’s second son, Owen King, is also a writer and, unlike his brother, doesn’t seem to mind using his dad’s last name. Stephen and Owen also collaborated on a book together called Sleeping Beauties.

King took a job in a laundry and continued to write stories in his spare time until late 1971, when he began working as an English educator at Hampden Academy.

King has put the offer out to any aspiring filmmakers that they can buy the rights to adapt any of his short stories for only $1. They’re called “Dollar Babies,” and King’s website has a list of available options. Independent filmmakers have created the “Dollar Baby Festival” to showcase their work.

King doesn’t like the attention that he gets as a celebrity, and he hates being surrounded by huge crowds. As a result, he only gives out autographs at book signing events.

The movie It horrified audiences, but most fans don’t realize that there was a scene too traumatic for film: a twisted sex scene where the group of kids–known as the Losers’ Club–engage in an orgy. For valid reason, children engaging in intimacy is sure to attract controversy, which I likely why the scene was omitted from both the 1990 and 2017 onscreen adaptations.
