City of Joy Kolkata was the first city to see the arrival of the Metro. Work on the country's first Metro started in 1972 while operations begun in 1984.

Rapid Metro Rail Gurgaon, which started operations in November 2013, is India's first privately owned and operated Metro netwrok.

The Delhi Metro, India's first modern Metro network, which began operations in 2002, is set to become the fourth-largest Metro network in the world after Shanghai, Beijing, and London in another six months or so.

Fourteen per cent of all commuters in Delhi use the Metro while the global average is 16 per cent. In other cities, the Metro's role as main transporter has yet to gain significance.

In future, the entire Metro network will carry 12-15 million passengers every day, about four times of their current capacity.

The first phase of the project is set to cost the exchequer Rs 6,928 crore and the second corridor Rs 5,494 crore.

The project is being financed under 50:50 Joint Venture model with equity participation from the Central government and the state government.

State-owned SAIL said it has supplied around 20,000 tonnes of steel for the 8.5 km long priority stretch of the North-South Corridor of Lucknow Metro Rail. SAIL has supplied reinforcement bars, structural steel and plates for this stretch and is ready to supply for the remaining stretch.

An 11 km East-West corridor from Charbagh Railway station till Vasant Kunj, is nearing completion. This stretch includes 6.3 km underground network.

It is built and operated by the Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation Limited (LMRC). Its first and currently only section inaugurated on 5 September 2017 and opened for public on September 6, 2017, with the Red Line.
