Meghalaya literally means abode of clouds. True to its name, it receives ample rainfall and is the wettest region of India. The state is mainly comprised of Garo, Khasi and Jaintia Hills. Let us have a look at some interesting facts about Meghalaya

One thing which is not present in any other part of the world, Meghalaya has in itself living bridges which help one to touch clouds and feel so lively.

The living bridges are also known as root bridges which date back to many thousands of years ago. These are mostly located in Cherapunjji. The living bridges move and they are made of planks and ropes and it is also an achievement to get to the other end of the bridge.

The tribal people of Meghalaya are Christians and this is the main reason that Christmas is celebrated with such pomp and show in the region. Hindus, Muslims and sikhs do form a part of this region but they are a minority in the state. The Christian people are very rooted to their culture and religion and they also take the Bible with up most honour and dignity.

Meghalaya is that state which is recorded as the place with the world’s heaviest rainfall. Cherapunjji has the record of the second highest rainfall in the world in a calendar year.

Meghalaya is home to three indigenous tribes, the Khasis, the Jaintas and the Garos.

Cherapunjji is always covered with clouds and the region looks very classic and beautiful. Presence of dense forests and pines are also a reason that rainfall is heavy in this region.

The three tribes live in distinct parts of the state; the Jaintas occupy the Jainta Hills of eastern Meghalaya,

Meghalaya has many ancient caves in its folds and each of these have a story to narrate to its visitors. The Jaintia Hills has the longest canal which stretches up to 22 km and it then connects to two separate caves.

The Khasis occupy the Khasi Hills of central Meghalaya while the Garos reside in the western Garo Hills.

The cave is completely dark from the inside and one has to crawl through the cave. Very intricate designs and carvings are present in the caves which make it fabulous.

Belonging to the Proro Austroloid Monkhmer race, they are one of the earliest ethnic group of settlers of the Indian sub-continent.

The Garos who prefer to call themselves as Achiks and their land as Achikland, belong to the Bodo family of the Tibeto-Burman race and are believed to have migrated from Tibet.

The state of heavy rainfall

Meghalaya is full of visitors all through the year. But, the best time of the year is between March and July. These seasons are when one can see the sizzling waterfalls and green mountains.
