The mildly sloped hill sides and the rain prevalent in the Singalila range were found to be most suitable for growing this variety of the camilia bush. Thus the primary deciduous forests were rapidly felled and tea bushes were planted. However the British rapidly found that not all areas were suited to tea cultivation due to inadequate water drainage and sunshine.So they started replanting secondary forests with the imported cryptomaria japonica pine trees. But tea estates were here to stay.

Darjeeling is also famous for tea tourism. The pleasant climate and the steep slopes make Darjeeling an ideal place for tea plantation. Tea tourism is the latest concept but the popularity of tea tourism in Darjeeling has already reached sky-high.

Most of the greenery of these hills come from tea bushes and are pleasant to the eye. The largest tea estate is Okai tea estate belonging to the Goodrike group in Mirik. The most famous is of course the Makaibari tea estate while the most expensive teas are manufactured by the Castleton tea estates.Tukvar and Reeshihat tea estatesare also famous.

Most of these estates have homestays where tourists can enjoy the hospitality and culture of the locals. These estates provide a source of income from tea and tourism. All the sub divisions of the darjeeling district have tea estates.

The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute further runs a boarding school for mountaineering students and maintains a memorial dedicated to Tenzing Norgay, a restaurant, and a souvenir shop.
