What is Bermuda Triangle Stories?

Unexplained circumstances surround some of these accidents

Don't look up. The area has one of the highest incidences of UFO sightings  and alien abductions have been a popular explanation for the disappearances. But abductions aren't the only theory; some believe it’s a portal to other planets.

Over the years, many theories have been offered to explain the mystery. Some writers have expanded upon Berlitz's ideas about Atlantis, suggesting that the mythical city may lie at the bottom of the sea and be using its reputed "crystal energies" to sink ships and planes.

It plays havoc with instruments on deck. Magnetic vortices, hot and cold currents, could create the electromagnetic gymnastics affecting instruments and vehicles. Others mention an electronic fog that could block both the visibility and the instruments.

Can you smell gas? Scientists have discovered large concentrations of methane gas – due to decomposing sea organisms – trapped in the ocean floor. The methane accumulates as super concentrated methane ice, and if a pocket ruptures, the gas surges up and erupts on the surface without warning. If a ship is in the area of the blowout, the water beneath it would suddenly become much less dense. It could sink and sediment could quickly cover it as it settles onto the sea floor.

journalist named Larry Kusche asked exactly that question, and came to a surprising answer: there is no mystery about strange disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle. Kusche exhaustively re-examined the "mysterious disappearances" and found that the story was basically created by mistakes, mystery mongering, and in some cases outright fabrication — all being passed along as fact-checked truth.

It's one of the deepest spots on earth. In fact, the underwater topography of the area could be a factor in the history of disappearances. It goes from a gently sloping continental shelf to an extremely deep drop-off. Some of the deepest trenches in the world are found in the area of the Bermuda Triangle. Ships or planes that sink into these deep trenches will probably never be found.

Navy bombers became disoriented while flying over the area; the planes were never found. Other boats and planes have seemingly vanished from the area in good weather without even radioing distress messages.

The Bermuda Triangle has popped up in pop culture since the 60’s. It’s as if the whole concept was just made up for a Scooby Doo episode. A mysterious triangle of islands that makes giant ships, high-flying planes, and wayward travelers disappear without a trace? That’s downright ghoulish.

Don't rely on your compass. The Bermuda Triangle is one of only two places on Earth where a compass points to true north rather than magnetic north. If this compass variation or error is not compensated for, ships and planes could find themselves far off course.

Blink and you'll miss it. The area is known for extremely violent and unexpected storms, which build up and dissipate quickly.

Bermuda Triangle, none of them prove that mysterious disappearances occur more frequently there than in other well-traveled sections of the ocean.

The reputation of the Bermuda Triangle inspired a board game in 1976 for families with odd senses of humor and later provided the spooky setting of a video game for the original ATARI gaming system. A 10,000 reward was advertised in the 1970’s to movie-goers, offering the prize to anyone who could solve the Bermuda Triangle mystery after watching a Vincent Price-narrated documentary about it.

It's true that there have been a lot of strange disappearances. Only between 1945 and 1965, Wikipedia states that up to five planes crashed in the area, and that 10 ships sank or disappeared from 1800 to 1963. Other pages or websites reference much, much longer lists.

In fact, people navigate the area every day without incident.

A mystery since the fifties. The earliest instances of unusual disappearances in the area were reported in 1950 – and in the almost seven decades since, speculation has been rife about the actual cause of a number of weird happenings.

The huge size of the triangle contributes to the difficulty–and often impossibility–of recovering any debris or wreckage from the ships and planes that have crashed within it. If finding your phone in your apartment can be a tough task, imagine how impossible it is to find clear evidence of a plane crash in 500,000 square miles at sea.

The triangle’s strange weather, electromagnetic issues, and other phenomena can be experienced a bit outside the borders of its geographical markers. Depending on the weather or time of year, the boundaries of the triangle can extend beyond where it’s been drawn on a map.

The term ‘Bermuda Triangle’ was first used in an article by Vincent H. Gaddis for a pulp fiction magazine in 1964. The National Geographic Society reprinted some of Gaddis’ work, giving credibility to his choice of name for the region. Now, ‘Bermuda Triangle’ is the preferred term of scientists and conspiracy theorists alike.
