With that said, considering that both companies had existed for some time before the merger, it should come as no surprise to learn that the roots of the Mercedes-Benz brand can be traced to much earlier times.

Looking back, the fact that both car makers registered their new trademarks in the summer of 1909 seems to mirror the events of 1886, since this was when Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz invented the car powered by the fast-running internal combustion engine – without even having any knowledge of one another.

Meanwhile, it can be said that the roots of Mercedes-Benz are even deeper still on the Benz & Cie side, seeing as how some people have been known to claim 1886.

Some 23 years later, the two still competing companies pointed the way ahead with their new brand symbols, by immediately using them as a badge and signet on their respective vehicles.

Bear in mind that this would’ve been around the same time as the invention of the car, meaning that the Mercedes-Benz brand has deep roots indeed.

6. Named For a Girl

Mercedes is a name for women that saw and still sees a fair amount of use in both Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries. For those who are curious, it is believed to have come into existence as a contraction of Maria de las Mercedes, which was a Spanish title for the Virgin Mary that meant Mary of the Mercies.

Finally, on 18 February 1925, both brands registered their new shared logo – Daimler's Mercedes star in Benz's laurel wreath.

Regardless, since this is the case, it should come as no surprise to learn that the first car called a Mercedes was named for a woman.

This was a highly symbolic action in anticipation of the merger, which became effective on 28 June 1926.

It was from these beginnings that the Mercedes-Benz trademark still used to this day developed.

To be exact, it was named for the daughter of Emil Jellinek, an Australian diplomat who happened to be a racing enthusiast, which is why he raced cars with Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft. Jellinek received a fair amount of success in his efforts that produced excellent press for the people who made his car, which is why Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft responded by making him a member of its Board of Directors as well as make continuing use of the name that he chose for his car.

Amusingly, it seems that Jellinek became rather enamored of the name as well, as shown by the fact that he later changed his surname to Jellinek-Mercedes.

7. Named For the First Production Automobile

As for the Benz & Cie side of things, some people connect Mercedes-Benz with the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, which is exactly what it sounds like in the sense that it means the Benz patent motorcar.

In short, this particular car has sometimes been claimed as the first production automobile, meaning something that was purposefully made to be moved by an internal combustion engine.

Of course, the Benz Patent-Motorwagen was made by Karl Benz of Benz & Cie fame. However, it is interesting to note that Benz’s wife Bertha Benz had a huge role as well in its creation as well.

Whereas Benz & Cie. ultimately only modified its trademark, DMG came up with an all-new logo for its "Mercedes" lettering in 1909: Alfred von Kaulla,

For example, she was the one who financed the whole process with her dowry, which was an extension of how she had been Benz’s business partner even before their marriage.

Furthermore, Bertha Benz had an keen eye for marketing, which is why she made a historic trip from Mannheim to Pforzheim in one of the Benz Patent-Motorwagen with her sons without bothering to tell her husband.

Chairman of the Supervisory Board at Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft, prompted a search for a catchy, easily recognisable symbol for the Mercedes-branded passenger cars.

On this occasion, she demonstrated considerable technical know-how in her own right, seeing as how she was the one who handled the issues that came up as she made the trip.

The defining idea came from Paul and Adolf Daimler, the sons of the company founder who had died several years earlier in 1900: they adapted a three-pointed star for use as the brand logo.

8. Made the Mercedes-Benz 770s Throughout the 30s and 40s

From the 1930s to the 1940s, Mercedes-Benz might have been best-known for the Mercedes-Benz 770, which was a rather luxurious car that saw a fair amount of use as state vehicles.

Their father, Gottlieb Daimler, had used a symbol like this one to mark the family's house on a postcard depicting a view of the town of Deutz during his time as technical director of Gasmotorenfabrik Deutz.
