1. The worst investment decision ever
Apple’s two founders, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, are well known. What is less well known is that there was a third founding member, Ronald Wayne.

Apple events start at 9am and the ads are timed to appear about 40 minutes into the presentations. Since Apple knows the lead-up doesn’t take exactly 40 minutes, they pad it by a minute or two. More recent ads have now moved to 9:41.

It’s been ten years since that important day, and without that announcement, an entire industry would take who knows how many more years to build up than the explosion the iPhone catalyzed.

Wayne sold his 10% stake in the company for $800 just 12 days after it was founded in April 1976. He received a further $1,500 payout. If he had stuck with the company, his share would now be worth $100bn.

Samsung and Apple may be archrivals in the smartphone arena, but that’s not stopping Apple from contracting Samsung to make its computer chips. They still trash each other’s phones, though.

2. The first Apple computer did not have a keyboard or screen
Apple’s first product, the Apple 1, was basically a motherboard. It didn’t have a keyboard, monitor or case. Some users made their own wooden cases and added keyboards.

3. MacIntosh was launched with a Ridley Scott TV ad
The Apple MacIntosh was launched in 1984 with a $1.5 million TV commercial directed by Ridley Scott that was aired during the Superbowl. It is regarded as one of the greatest TV commercials of all time.

The Apple iPhone was considered so revolutionary that Time Magazine named it Invention of the Year in 2007.

Back when the iPhone was being developed, the codename for the as-yet unnamed phone was “Purple“. iPhone developers even called their section in the Apple headquarters the “Purple Dorm”.

4. Steve Jobs was once exiled in 'Siberia'
When MacIntosh sales began to fall, Jobs fell out with the Apple board. He was removed from his role in the company and given an office in "a small, anonymous building occupied only by his secretary and a security guard", according to Tom Hornby.

Jailbreaking software Cydia was named after the worm cydia pomonella, which is thought to be the most common apple worm. Cydia creator Jay Freeman probably thought he was being clever.

Since the iPhone was released in 2007, Apple has filed more than 200 patents relating to the iPhone’s technology. Many of these patents, like Force Touch and over-the-air updates, lead directly to new and improved ways for publishers and developers to interact with users.

Jobs called his new office 'Siberia'. Jobs sold 85,000 Apple shares when the price was less than $14. Jobs and Wozniak left Apple in 1985.

When Steve Jobs told Scott Forstall to build the iPhone, Jobs said the team could be made up of anyone – except outside employees. Only current Apple employees could be on the project, and Forstall couldn’t tell them what they would be working on. The code name for the project was “Purple.”

The iPhone 4’s new metal design caused widespread problems among users after it was discovered that calls were getting disconnected when the phone was held a certain way. It became such a serious issue that it even earned the moniker Antennagate.

Apple’s iPhone wasn’t the first iPhone. Before Apple ever released the iPhone, Cisco Systems had originally patented the name. In fact, they sued Apple for calling its smartphone an iPhone.

5. Apple paid $427m to get Steve Jobs back

The iPhone’s Retina screen is the most expensive component at a whopping $28.50. Of course, this doesn’t take into account the design, assembly or even branding of the phone, which is why it still costs over $200.
