There is no question that ships and boats float in water. As long as the air in a ship's hold is lighter than the water the ship displaces, it will not sink. If you were to drill a hole in the hull, the inflowing water would make the ship heavier and it would sink.

The most useful part of submarine is it's ability to evade detection. In other words submarine's stealthines is it's major advantage over surface vessels. First and foremost you obviously can't see it with eyes.

The only way of detecting a submarine is through active or passive sonars. In other words listening to submarine noise or bouncing of sonar sounds of its surface.

US submarines are considered by far the most quite and stealthy. That's why the submarines are called the silent service.

During WWII, L Ron Hubbard once led a 68 hour battle against two Japanese submarines which he claimed definitely sunk, beyond doubt. An analysis later concluded that there were never any submarines in the area.

As for their usefulness, they can of course be used to sink other ships and submarines, but also for reconnaissance, ears dropping, intelligence gathering and for covertly inserting special forces to unfriendly countries.

In contrast, submarines are designed to sink, but must be able to resurface as well. How can a boat not only move forward and backward, but also up and down? That feature is made possible by the ability of the boat to make itself light or heavy.

In WWII, weather reports were censored to prevent enemy submarines from learning about conditions. A football game in Chicago was so covered in fog that the radio announcer couldn’t see the field, but afterward he was officially thanked for never using the word fog or mentioning the weather.

Oceans are most turbulent where wind meets water: on their surface.

any varied uses. Submarines are used as scouts to check areas of the sea for enemy activity. Submarines are used to intercept and sink Enemy shipping. Submarines are used to transport covert and commando troops and insert them into enemy territory.

Here is how that works: the container in which the submarine pilot sits is not large. It is called a pressure hull for submarines, because it pushes away the weight of the water. The boat has tanks attached to it. As long as they contain air, the boat will float. When the submarine pilot pumps water into the tanks and lets out the air, the submarine will slowly sink.

A $350m drillship built in the early ’70s by US billionaire, Howard Hughes, to collect mineral riches from the ocean floor was actually a cover for the CIA to be used to lift a lost Soviet submarine, loaded with nuclear missiles, up from the floor of the Pacific Ocean, 3 miles deep.

The waves that race across the sea are a sign of energy, originally transmitted by the Sun and whipped up into winds, racing from one side of the planet to the other.

How does the submarine come back up? The tanks need to be filled with air or another gas to squeeze the water back out. Think of the balloons you know from parties or fairgrounds. They contain helium, a gas that is even lighter than air and makes the balloons rise up. After a few days, the helium escapes and the balloon is back on the ground.

Ships battle and lurch across tough seas where no fish—worth its salt—would ever swim.

Only once in history has one submarine deliberately sunk another submerged submarine.

What is water pressure? Water pressure is the weight of water. The deeper you dive, the more water is above your body, which means that pressure increases. Because our lungs are always full of air, they would be compressed more and more. That means we need a strong protective armor to take deep dives, and that is the purpose of the pressure hull.

Sailing ships make good use of winds, harnessing the gusts of air to make a very effective form of propulsion.

A US nuclear submarine that sank in deep water in 1968 is still resting at the bottom of the sea at a known location. Its nuclear reactor and nuclear weapons have never been recovered.

Pentagon freaked out in the 1980s when they realized Finland had, against their expectations, managed to build two Mir submarines capable of diving to 6000 meters. They went on to shut down the whole Finnish submarine industry by privately threatening the country with heavy sanctions.

Diesel-powered ships stay on the surface for a different reason: their engines need a steady supply of oxygen to burn fuel.

Imagine you are going over the deepest place in the ocean with a boat. It is deeper than the highest mountain. Now imagine you were to throw in a soda can, which would have to be closed. It would sink and sink until it reached the bottom of the sea. It may be a bit dented, but it would stay intact, because the water cannot compress the soda in the can. Now let's take a soda can that is closed but contains air.

Since sound can travel through the water better than it can air, the potential number of decibels is greatly increased. LFA Sonar used by submarines is the loudest man-made noise, reaching 200+ decibels. Marine biologists believe that sea creatures may beach themselves to escape the noise.

The worst thing that could ever happen to you on a ship in the middle of the ocean would be for water to flood in and make you sink. But if you're on-board a submarine, sinking is exactly what you want! Unlike ships, which pitch and roll as they struggle across the waves, submarines slip swiftly and silently through the calmer waters beneath.
