Imagine spending hundreds of millions of dollars to make a movie… and then watching it fall flat at the box office.

An all-star cast led by John Cusack and Amanda Peet helped make 2012 one of 2009’s highest-grossing films, but as for its staying power… well, the fear of the Mayan calendar predicting the world’s end feels pretty silly now, right? However, if you’re into major special effects that include entire cities being washed away and firey plane wrecks, it’s worth a watch.

While Men in Black 3 isn’t necessarily a bad movie, it’s nowhere near the treasure that was the first MIB. Sure, there’s more aliens, more effects, more Josh Brolin, but it fails to capture the same heart. In the words of Rene Rodriguez of the Miami Herald, “Men in Black 3 is so dull and empty, it’s the first movie that has ever made me think, ‘Thank God this is in 3D.’”

The trailers looked good, but the movie was just bland and it was UNNECESSARILY LONG. Budget: 115 crore

Shah Rukh Khan tried to experiment with this movie but failed terribly. Fancy VFX can’t make up for a bad plot. Budget: 120 crore

BAJIRAON MASTANI (2015) Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s creation deserved to carry a budget of this scale. Beautifully shot and well acted. Budget: 145 crore

HAPPY NEW YEAR (2014)
Perfect example of the inverse relation between quality and budget of Indian movies. Budget: 150 crore

TIGER ZINDA HAI Almost 3 hour long movie full of terrible dialogues and bad editing. But sadly, it’s stretching to enter 300 crore club because of Salman’s stardom. Budget: 150 crore

DHOOM 3 The only disappointing Aamir Khan movie in a VERY long time & it’s the one with the biggest budget. Only proves the relation more. Budget: 175 crore

PREM RATAN DHAN PAYO Another Salman Khan big budget movie on this list. Still gives me nightmares. Budget: 180 crore

BAAHUBALI: THE BEGINNING A lesson for Bollywood movies that you can spend big bucks and can still have a good storyline. Budget: 180 crore

THUGS OF HINDOSTAN Details of this movie are not out yet, but Thugs Of Hindostan stars Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan. Let’s hope it makes use of the big budget it’s riding on. Budget: 210 crore
