68-year-old Meryl Streep is one of the greatest actresses of her generation. With a career spanning four decades and including three Academy Awards, there’s no denying that Streep is a force to be reckoned with. The esteemed actress has constantly chosen roles with depth and flair and maintained a distinguished, honest persona off-screen. Here are six facts you may not know about one of Hollywood’s greatest stars.

In 2010 Streep was awarded the honorary degree ‘Doctor of Arts’ from Harvard University for her significant contribution to the arts. Streep completed a Master of Fine Arts at the Yale School of Drama in 1975, during which time she supported herself by waitressing and typing on the side.

“The only thing I have remorse about is that I wasted a lot of time dieting”, Streep told MiNDFOOD in 2014. “I’ve wasted a lot of time on that and I regret it. I was stupid thinking so much about it, obsessing over it, but actresses do that. But nowadays, oh, I’m over it. I was over it maybe 20 years ago.”

“I tend to be supervisory in everything I do. I was more the bad cop and more worried about the kids while my husband was more laissez-faire. I always think when you hear from your kids, ‘Everybody else is allowed to, why can’t I?’ as a mother, you say to them, ‘I don’t care that everybody else is doing it'”, she told us in 2014.

Meryl's early performing ambitions leaned toward the opera. She became interested in acting while a student at Vassar and upon graduation she enrolled in the Yale School of Drama.

Streep later provided the voice of Mrs. Fox in the animated Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), a film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s children’s book, and starred with Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin in It’s Complicated (2009), a comedy about a divorced woman having an affair with her remarried ex-husband.

She gave an outstanding performance in her first film role, Julia (1977), and the next year she was nominated for her first Oscar for her role in The Deer Hunter (1978).

She then stepped into the role of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady (2011), a portrait of the former British prime minister.

She went on to win the Academy Award for her performances in Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) and Sophie's Choice (1982), in which she gave a heart-wrenching portrayal of an inmate mother in a Nazi death camp.

For her performance, Streep earned her eighth Golden Globe Award and third Oscar. In the lighthearted Hope Springs (2012), she and Tommy Lee Jones starred as a couple trying to save their stagnant marriage.
