The Apollo program was designed to land humans on the Moon and bring them safely back to Earth.

Six of the missions (Apollos 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, and 17) achieved this goal.

Apollos 7 and 9 were Earth orbiting missions to test the Command and Lunar Modules, and did not return lunar data.

Apollos 8 and 10 tested various components while orbiting the Moon, and returned photography of the lunar surface.

Apollo 13 did not land on the Moon due to a malfunction, but also returned photographs. The six missions that landed on the Moon returned a wealth of scientific data and almost 400 kilograms of lunar samples.

Experiments included soil mechanics, meteoroids, seismic, heat flow, lunar ranging, magnetic fields, and solar wind experiments.

The Apollo mission consisted of a Command Module (CM) and a Lunar Module (LM). The CM and LM would separate after lunar orbit insertion.

One crew member would stay in the CM, which would orbit the Moon, while the other two astronauts would take the LM down to the lunar surface.

After exploring the surface, setting up experiments, taking pictures, collecting rock samples, etc., the astronauts would return to the CM for the journey back to Earth.

The choice among competing techniques for achieving a Moon landing and return was not resolved until considerable further study.

Budget estimates vary, but in 2008, the Congressional Research Service put Apollo’s inflation-adjusted costs at $98 billion—several times more expensive than the Manhattan Project and the equivalent of almost $500 for every man, woman and child living in the United States in 1969.

Apollo was the NASA program that resulted in American astronauts' making a total of 11 spaceflights and walking on the moon.

Three methods were considered. In direct ascent, one vehicle would lift off from Earth, land on the Moon, and return.

However, the proposed Nova rocket would not be ready by 1970. In Earth orbit rendezvous, a spacecraft carrying the crew would dock in Earth orbit with the propulsion unit that would carry enough fuel to go to the Moon. However, this method required two separate launches.

Apollo unfolded during the famous “space race” between the United States and the Soviet Union, but in September 1963, President Kennedy shocked the world by suggesting that the two Cold War foes might join forces for a tandem lunar mission.

The first four flights tested the equipment used in the Apollo Program. Six of the other seven flights landed on the moon. The first Apollo flight happened in 1968. The first moon landing took place in 1969. The last moon landing was in 1972.

A total of 12 astronauts walked on the moon. The astronauts conducted scientific research there. They studied the lunar surface. They collected moon rocks to bring back to Earth.
