UNICEF was established on 11 December 1946 by the United Nations to meet the emergency needs of children in post-war Europe and China.

Its full name was the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund.

The Early Days. The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) was established in December 11, 1946 by the United Nations General Assembly.

Shortly after 1953, the UNICEF started working for the protection, survival and development of boys and girls in 190 nations and regions around the globe.
