On 29 December 1922 a conference of plenipotentiary delegations from the Russian SFSR,

the Transcaucasian SFSR, the Ukrainian SSR

the Byelorussian SSR approved the Treaty on the Creation of the USSR and the Declaration of the Creation of the USSR, forming the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

The unsuccessful August 1991 coup against Gorbachev sealed the fate of the Soviet Union. Planned by hard-line Communists,

, the coup diminished Gorbachev's power and propelled Yeltsin and the democratic forces to the forefront of Soviet and Russian politics.

It existed from 1922 until 1991. It was the first country to declare itself socialist and build towards a communist society.

It was a union of 14 Soviet Socialist Republics and one Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (Russia).

The Soviet Union was created about five years after the Russian Revolution.

The U.S.S.R. was the successor to the Russian Empire of the tsars. Following the 1917 Revolution,

four socialist republics were established on the territory of the former empire:

The economy of the SFR Yugoslavia and thus of the Socialist Republic of Croatia was initially influenced by the Soviet Union.

As the Communist Party of Yugoslavia was member of the Communist International,

Yugoslav communists thought that the Soviet way to the socialism is the only option to create the socialist state.
