The telegraph and telephone are very similar in concept, and it was through Bell's attempts to improve the telegraph that he found success with the telephone.

The first phonebook in history was just one page long.

Incidentally, another inventor, Robert Weitbrecht, who was himself deaf, invented the telephone typewriter in 1950. TTY, as it was dubbed, has become a common way for deaf people to communicate over telephone lines for many years.

He gave Bell the financial backing required for him to carry on his work developing the multiple telegraph. However Bell failed to mention that he and his accomplice, another brilliant young electrician Thomas Watson, were developing an idea which occurred to him during the summer.

In 1876, a cash-strapped Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the first successful telephone offered to sell his telephone patent to Western Union for $100,000. They declined.

Bell and Watson continued to work on the harmonic telegraph at the insistence of Hubbard and a few other financial backers. During March 1875 Bell met with a man called Joseph Henry without the knowledge of Hubbard.

On June 3, 1880, Alexander Graham Bell transmitted the first wireless telephone message on his "photophone." The device allowed for the transmission of sound on a beam of light, without wires.

Joseph Henry was the respected director of the Smithsonian Institution.

In 1885, the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) was started to manage the long distance calls of Bell's American Bell Telephone Company.

Both Bell and Watson were spurred on by Henry's opinions and continued their work with even greater enthusiasm and determination. By June 1875 they realised their goal of creating a device that could transmit speech electrically would soon be realised.

In 1872, Gray founded the Western Electric Manufacturing Company, the great-grandparent of todays Lucent Technologies.
