What is Washing Machine and how does it work ?

14 The finished unit is crated automatically. A machine opens the cardboard box, which was flat for shipment, and drops it over the washer. The top and bottom flaps are simultaneously folded over and glued.

You put your clothes in the machine and detergent either in the machine itself or in a tray up above.

Then the machine applies pressure on the top and bottom of the crate to make sure the glue sets properly. After the glue has set, the machine puts a banding strap around the top of the crate to add strength for lift truck transportation (the units are carried from the top to reduce the risk of damage).

You set the program you want and switch on the power.

The programmer opens the water valves so hot and cold water enter the machine and fill up the outer and inner drums.

Washing machines make the household tasks so much easier, especially if you have a big family and lots of laundry to do. While using a washing machine may seem so much more straightforward than washing those loads by hand, there is a complex mechanism

All parts purchased from outside manufacturers are spot checked before use, and most sub-assemblies are checked as well. For instance, all transmissions are automatically tested for operation, noise, and vibration.

The water usually enters at the top and trickles down through the detergent tray, washing any soap there into the machine.

An inner drum. This is where you put the clothes when you’re ready to wash. You’ll notice this drum rotates a bit when you touch it and there are a lot of holes punched into the drum. These allow the water to come in and wash the clothes.

All pumps are leak-tested using air, automatically if their assembly was automated and manually if it was manual. All painted parts are visually inspected for defects. Daily samples are put in detergent, bleach, and steam baths for corrosion testing.

The programmer switches off the water valves.

Paddles. These are ridges that lie on the edge of the drum and help move your clothes around while being washed.

Once it has been completely assembled, the machine is filled with water and tested for noise, vibration, and visual defects, as well as properly functional controls and mechanisms. After packaging, some units are put through severe tests to simulate the transportation conditions to test the cartoning process.

The thermostat measures the temperature of the incoming water.

Mechanical washing machines appeared in the early 1800s, although they were all hand-powered. Early models cleaned clothes by rubbing them, while later models cleaned clothes by moving them through water. Steam-powered commercial washers appeared in the 1850s, but home washing machines remained entirely hand-powered until the early 1900s, when several companies started making electric machines.

Agitator. These are more common in top load machines and is a paddle in the middle that helps turn the clothes around in the soapy water.

When the water is hot enough, the programmer makes the inner drum rotate back and forth, sloshing the clothes through the soapy water.

The outer drum. This is not obvious when you look inside the washer, but there is another drum that holds the water while the inner drum or agitator rotates. This part is completely water tight to prevent your machine from leaking all over the bathroom or kitchen!

The detergent pulls the dirt from your clothes and traps it in the water.

The last wringer washer manufactured in the United States was made in June of 1990 at Speed Queen's plant in Ripon, Wisconsin. The major U.S. manufacturers today are General Electric, Maytag (Montgomery Ward), Speed Queen (Amana and Montgomery Ward), Whirlpool (Kenmore), and White Consolidated (Frigidaire and Westinghouse).
