What is Tree ?

A tree is a tall plant with woody tissue. Trees gather light for photosynthesis through their leaves; this process creates “food” for the tree.

Community parks with many trees are used more by the community than parks that have only a few trees or no trees

Most of a tree trunk is dead tissue and serves only to support the weight of the tree crown.

Trees increase the value of property. Houses surrounded by trees sell for 18-25 percent higher than houses with no trees.

Trees provide shelter and food for wildlife such as birds, squirrels, and bugs. Groves of trees provide food and cover for larger mammals, such as raccoons and deer.

The outside layers of the tree trunk are the only living portion. The cambium produces new wood and new bark.

Trees must be protected. Felling of trees must be avoided. Trees serve to maintain ecological and environmental balance and equilibrium. As trees take a long time to grow, deforestation cannot be rectified quickly. Besides, the benefits of pristine forest cover cannot be replicated easily by planting trees.

The band of tissue outside of the cambium is the phloem.

Trees make people feel good. Workers are more productive when they see trees along their commute routes and from their office windows.

Trees generate jobs and contribute raw materials for buildings, newspapers, books and more than 15,000 other forest products. Trees are renewable, biodegradable and recyclable. Wood by-products become such products as vitamins, plastics, vanilla flavoring, photographic film, toothpaste and medicines.

Older, larger trees with wide trunks have more capacity to capture & store CO2 than small trees do & are more beneficial to the community.

Phloem transports new materials (the sugars created from photosynthesis) from the crown to the roots. Dead phloem tissue becomes the bark of a tree.

Hospital patients who have a view of trees heal faster, use fewer pain medications, and leave the hospital sooner than patients with a view of a brick wall. Patients with a view of trees spend 8 percent fewer days in the hospital.

A tree with a 76 cm-diameter removes 70 times more pollution per year than does a tree with a 7.5 cm trunk

Around 1.5 tons of CO2 are sequestered from the air & stored for every ton of new wood that grows

Consumers are willing to spend more money in shopping districts with trees. They are willing to pay more for products purchased in a shopping district with trees. Those same shoppers also say they are willing to stay longer and rate the products and stores as higher quality in a shopping district with the trees.

Dead xylem tissue forms the heartwood, or the wood we use for many different purposes.
