Let's look at each of the parts of a woody plant's stem and see how they are put together and how they grow larger year after year.

The witches’ prophecy seems to be fulfilled when the advancing army storm Macbeth’s castle, under cover of the trees.

The band of tissue outside of the cambium is the phloem. Phloem transports new materials (the sugars created from photosynthesis) from the crown to the roots. Dead phloem tissue becomes the bark of a tree.
