He came face to face with a tiger. His gun did not work, and his dagger fell on the ground as the tiger jumped on him.

Mysore was now too strong and, under Tipu's efficient and dedicated administration, was growing too much in power for his neighboring states to feel secure.

He was his father's right arm in the wars from which Haidar emerged as the most powerful ruler of southern India.

Tipu Sultan, the Tiger of Mysore, or Tippoo Sahib as the British called him, was the Indian ruler who resisted the East India Company’s conquest of southern India.

He reached for the dagger, picked it up, and killed the tiger with it. That earned him the name "The Tiger of Mysore".

In 1782, when Haidar died during the Second Anglo-Mysore War, Tipu was very effective in bringing the west coast under his control. After his accession, he continued the war until the English were forced to make peace with him.

The Marathas in the northwest, joining the Nizam in the north, became embroiled with Tipu in 1785.

Public opinion in England considered him a vicious tyrant, while modern Indian nationalists have hailed him as a freedom fighter, but both views are the products of wishful thinking.

He learnt shooting, riding and swordsmanship at a very young age, that is the reason he, at the young age of 15, won a war with a force that was only two to three thousand people strong.

They were defeated, but Tipu gave them very lenient peace terms in the vain hope of winning their friendship against the English, who he knew would resume hostilities with him as soon as they could. Simultaneously, he continued his friendly overtures to the English.

A small, plump man with a round face and black moustache, who wore clothes glittering with jewels, Tipu was vigorous, forceful, brave, warlike and cruel; a devout Muslim ruling a mainly Hindu population.

Isolated from his neighbors in India, he also sent embassies to France and to the Caliph at Constantinople to gain their support, but little real benefit came of it.

He had inherited the throne from his father Haidar Ali, who had driven out the previous Hindu dynasty.

By 1790 the East India Company, much better organized than ever before and now directly supported by the British government, was dead set on subjugating Tipu.

Tipu Sultan was born to Hyder Ali and Fatima Fakhr Un Nisa. They had named their baby Fath Ali but often called him Tipu after the local saint Tipu Mastan Aulia

Tipu used to say it was better to live for two days like a tiger than drag out an existence like a sheep for two hundred years. He had a special reverence for tigers.

As per various news reports, Historian William Logan has mentioned in the “Malabar Manual” that Thalipparampu and Thrichambaram temples of Chirackal Taluqa, Ponmeri Temple of Badakara, and Thiruvangatu of Tellicherry were among the major temples smashed by Tipu Sultan.

Allying with the Marathas and the Nizam, it put all its might into an expedition against Mysore. Tipu lost half of his kingdom.

He kept six in his fortress-city of Seringapatam (now Sriringapatna), 200 miles west of Madras, where his throne was shaped and striped like a tiger.
