The moon does not have a light of its own, but shines from the reflection of the light from the Sun. Since the moon takes almost 29 ½ days to complete one rotation on her axis, it would almost appear the same for us on Earth as we see only the same side for most of the time.

When taken a closer look, it is understood that the surface of the moon is hard and cold, just traces of either ice and snow or rock and sand. Life cannot exist on moon and hence no kind of vegetation or animals are found.

The moon is a mass of big mountains and extinct volcanoes. Several craters are found on moon. This is what we see when we look at the moon with our naked eye, though the crater are not distinct from earth, the irregularities are seen miles apart.

The moon does play an important role in the formations of calendars. Apart from it, the lunar eclipses also form where the sun, moon and earth comes in a row and the moon falls in the shadow of the earth.

Soon after the eclipse, when the earth moves away, one would find a small crescent moon which then rotates forming the full moon and half moon on its journey.

Neil Armstrong was the first person to land on Moon and makes a detailed study on the moon. Ever since then, man has travelled to moon often and researches are going on to find if life could exist on moon at some point of time.The Moon is our nearest neighbour in space and a natural satellite. It was believed earlier that the Moon was a piece of the Earth which broke away billions of years ago.

Today the astronomers believe that both the Earth and Moon were formed from the same cloud of dust close to 5 billion years ago.

The Moon is located 3,84,400 kms away from us, it has a diameter of 2,160 miles and takes 27 days, 7 hours and 43 minutes to complete one orbit around the Earth.

Since it has no atmosphere, the temperatures on the Moon vary from 115° centigrade to —160° centigrade. It is a desolate place with no plants or life of any type. The black spots we see on the Moon are huge craters formed either due to volcanic activity or due to impact from outer space. Neil Armstrong along with Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins was the first man to visit the moon in July 1969.

The moon is one of the. smallest of the heavenly bodies which can be seen from the earth. But it is the nearest to us, and on that account, with the exception of the sun, appears the target. The moon travels round the earth in a period of about one month, just as the earth goes round the sun in a day.

The earth, however, turns round upon its axis once every twenty-four hours, thus causing the alternation of day and night, whereas the moon takes a month to revolve on her axis, so that she always presents to us very nearly the same surface.

The moon has no light of her own like the sun and the stars, but shines by means of the reflected light of the sun. As the side which we see is not always that upon which the sun shines, her form appears to change and to grow larger and smaller.

In physical condition the moon differs widely from the earth. Even to the naked eye some peculiarities are obvious. If we attentively watch the full moon, we soon become familiar with its spotted surface, which never changes. From this the conclusion is drawn that it cannot be like that of the earth, which is often obscured by clouds and mist.

If we use the telescope, we find that all the details of the moon’s surface are hard and cold. There is no shade or delicate colouring, and nothing like mist or cloud has ever been seen. There seems to be nothing but bare rock and sand, or ice and snow, and there are no traces of vegetation or animal life.

The moon is a mass of mountains and extinct volcanoes. Several of the craters have a diameter of forty or fifty miles. One of them has a diameter of as much as seventy-eight miles.

Many have central cones closely resembling those in the volcanic re­gions of the earth. In some case the craters are filled nearly to the brim with lava. The volcanoes, however, seem to be all ex­tinct. The mountains are extremely rugged in character, a feature that is mainly due to the absence of air and water.

On the earth the hills are rounded and moulded by the action of storms, by rain and snow; but as these agencies are absent from the moon, its mountains stand as rugged as when they were first formed mil­lions of years ago.

The moon is of essential service to man. Combined with the sun, it exerts an attraction upon the earth which is the cause of the tides.

Tides are of great service to navigation. They carry vessels in and out of port and keep navigable many harbours which would otherwise become impossible owing to the silting up of the world’s work and not skulk in idleness.

The moon is the satellite of the earth. It moves round the earth. It shines at night by light reflected from the Sun. It looks beautiful. The bright Moonlight is very soothing. The earthly objects shine like silver in the moonlight. We are fascinated by the enchanting beauty of the Moon.

The moon is not as beautiful as it looks. It seems to be lovely when it shines in the sky at night. As a matter of fact it is devoid of plants and animals.
