Most of us grew up learning certain facts about beauty, and for the most part, they’ve helped us look our best.

But for every true beauty fact there is in the world, there’s just as many myths that continue to be believed.

So we decided to put together a list of the most common myths related to beauty, and for good measure, we added some facts that can sound a tad unbelievable, even though they’re true.

Retinol which is used in a lot of anti-ageing products, will not make up you any more susceptible to sunburn as you were before putting it on.

Retinol should only be used at night, that’s true, but it’s not because it will damage your skin during the day. You’re a woman, not a vampire.

The reason Retinol is an ingredient in night creams is because it is very sensitive to light, which renders it useless if you used it in daylight. That being said, you should always wear SPF on your face, even during the winter months.

Always file your nails in the same direction, allowing your nails to grow faster and longer. Filing from both directions on one nail can lead to breakage and peeling.

This is one of the biggest myths out there. No matter if you cross your legs or not, you can be susceptible to varicose veins if it’s in your genetic makeup.

The visible blood vessels are down to a problem with the veins themselves or high blood pressure, which can be caused by genetics, obesity, gender, inactivity, age or pregnancy.

Sounds like total bulls**t, but it’s 100% true. Antihistamines are a great way to get rid of redness on the face after working out and can even help some people who suffer from rosacea.

Despite product claims that sound tempting, you cannot scrub away blackheads, at least not completely.

Using a topical scrub removes the top portion of the blackhead, but does nothing to address the underlying cause, so they’re back again before too long.

The right way to restore moisture in your skin is not by rehydrating, but by repairing the epidermal barrier which protects the skin from irritants and pollutants.

Ever noticed that kids usually don’t need a moisturiser? That’s because their barrier is intact. So if your skin is feeling a tad dry and moisturiser isn’t helping, it could be time to give your skin a rest and allow it to heal by itself.

Plucking out a grey hair from the root does not cause neighbouring hair follicles to suddenly go grey, nor does it cause six new hairs to grow out of nowhere.

So rest assured, you can pluck out those random colourless strands with abandon, just be warned, they will grow back, so it could be a lost cause.

The perfect female face, according to researchers at the University of Toronto, has a distance between the pupils of 46 percent of the entire face, and a distance between the eyes and the mouth that is 36 percent of the distance from the hairline to the chin.

In a sea of persecuting waters, we often find ourselves treading. We, mothers, daughters, sisters, whose bodies and hearts are subject to the harsh storms of judgment. Although our bodies have the potential to create the most beautiful miracles, we find ourselves ridiculed, clothed often in a blanket of shame and disgrace with marks of infirmity.

Years may have passed, and suddenly you cannot remember the last time you felt comfortable in your own skin.  Body shaming becomes the common chatter in your head, and the reflection in the mirror begs for mercy as you scrutinize, agonize over flaws that only your eyes can see.

Every stretch mark, every curve and freckle and wrinkle, every gray hair or birthmark or dimple – there is nothing that can recreate the uniqueness of your beauty.   Though we may be continually subject to a one-sided perception of what is lovely and what is beautiful, it is in fact exactly what makes up you.

We will fight it, yes. We will take aggressive measures to improve and alter, forcing a mold that we were perhaps never meant to fit. And we find that our self-worth and acceptance are so easily tangled and enmeshed with body image.

In a world that so harshly judges and demands perfection, allow yourself to live at peace with your body, mind, and soul.   For it is in our ever-changing skin that we are metamorphosing, building in ourselves a capacity for love and grace.  It is only then when the wearing of our body will give rise to the charismatic soul that has loved, received love,
