What is Drone and how it works ?

Drone racing is a new sport, in which pilots are striving to fly around complex courses and obstacles as fast as possible. This usually happens with the help of FPV (First Person View) systems – this means the pilots are able to fly the drones from a distance using cameras and FPV goggles for more immersive experience, as if they’re sitting in the cockpit of the drone. The scoring is based on a combination of race time and passed checkpoints. Most drones are capable of flying with a speed of around 80mph (~128 km/h). It’s almost like a racing video game, only real drones are flying up and down in the air

Studies show that more than 85% of real estate buyers use the Internet to search for their new home. This makes it perfect for the drone industry to be involved in the real estate market, as appealing images and videos are a must when it comes to internet sales. It’s much cheaper to fly a drone than to rent the next best alternative – a helicopter. You get the same birds-eye view, but you also get a lot of freedom to experiment with the way you want to shape your footage – viewing angles, speed, height – you can control everything according to your taste.

The concept behind an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) allegedly first came to light during an air raid conducted by Austria on Aug 22, 1849, sending 200 balloons armed with time fuses and bombs over to Venice. While some balloons successfully carried out their task of grim destruction, many of the balloons were blown back over Austrian lines when the wind deviously changed its direction. For obvious reasons, the idea was later dropped.

Domino’s conducted a test using a drone which they called the ‘DomiCopter’ to deliver pizza. The Domicopter flew for 10 minutes and successfully delivered its precious cargo. While this was more of a public statement rather than an actual thing, it definitely opens doors to new possibilities of drone delivery, and we can’t deny it’s pretty stylish.

Authorities from other countries utilise drones for various security measures. The Tokyo metropolitan police department has even developed a special drone unit, where drones with nets are being used to catch other drones. Besides being really awesome, the drone police is tasked with apprehending other drones suspected of spying on buildings, flying over forbidden areas or perhaps just being a plain nuisance.

Obviously different drones fly at different speeds, but some drones are majestic speed demons. A popular commercial drone, the DJI Phantom 4, has a horizontal top speed of about 72kmh, which is already pretty fast. Racing drones have common top speeds of about 120kmh. A drone recently developed by Nissan, called the GT-R drone, reached an impressive top speed of about 185kmh.

Israel and America are the world’s most important manufacturers of military drones, with America being both the largest producer and a frequent user, and with Israel being the first country to develop military drone technology. These drones have been used for aerial surveillance, air strikes, and reconnaissance.

While drones come in all shapes and sizes, battery life is still generally very short. Most commercial drones have a flight time of around five to 10 minutes, but higher-end models can last up to 40 minutes. Racing drones may be unrivaled in speed and agility, but most only last about five minutes in the air. Batteries are used instead of gas-powered motors due to the fact that gas motors have a lag between throttling propeller rotational speed up and down, which significantly hinders control of flight.

A common practical use of drones would be aerial photography, taking pictures or video with a bird’s eye view (no, not for infringing the privacy of your neighbours). Ambulance drones with built-in defibrillators can be used to save lives. First Person View (FPV) drones have been used for aerial surveillance and security, including observing oil and gas fields to detect oil leakages. Equipped with the correct software, drones can also be used for agriculture and are capable of giving farmers in-depth details on the status of their crops.
