Kailash Satyarthi has been awarded Nobel Peace Prize for his “struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education".

Satyarthi has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize many times in the past for his his relentless crusade for defending child rights.

ailash Satyarthi (born on January 11, 1954) is a human rights activist from India who has been at the forefront of the global movement to end child slavery and exploitation since 1980, when he gave up a lucrative career as an electrical engineer to initiate a crusade against child servitude.

He is the first India-born person to have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and the seventh Indian Nobel laureate. Mother Teresa, who was born in Albania, was the first Indian Nobel peace prize winner. She was honoured in 1979.

Several prestigious awards have been conferred on him, including Defenders of Democracy Award (2009-US), Medal of the Italian Senate (2007-Italy), Robert F Kennedy International Human Rights Award (USA) and Fredric Ebert International Human Rights Award (Germany) etc.

He created the Global March Against Child Labour, a movement that is active in many countries.

He is also credited with establishing Rugmark, now known as Good Weave, in 1994. It is a kind of social certification for child labour free carpets in South Asia.

Born in the Vidisha district of Madhya Pradesh, Satyarthi went on to become a global icon for children, following in the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi.

He gave up his career as an electrical engineer more than 30 years ago to start `Bachpan Bachao Andolan`.

As a worldwide campaigner, he has been the architect of the single largest civil society network for the most exploited children, the Global March Against Child Labour, which is a worldwide coalition of children’s rights organisations, teachers’ unions and trade unions.

An advocate for those "whose voice has never been heard", Satyarthi started his journey in the 1980s

His efforts led to the adoption of ILO Convention 182 on worst forms of child labour in 1999.

He founded the Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) organization that educates children and integrates them into the society.

He is also the founding president of the Global Campaign for Education, an exemplar civil society movement working to end the global education crisis and GoodWeave International for raising consumer awareness and positive action in the carpet industry.

He has been at the helm of various forms of protests and demonstrations, all peexploitation of children for financial gainaceful, focusing on the grave

In 1994, Satyarthi started Goodweave, the first voluntary labelling and certification system of its kind that makes child labour-free rugs in South Asia.

He led a global march against child labour in 1998, where 7.2 million people participated from 103 countries. It was the largest campaign ever organised on child labour.

Since his childhood, Kailash had always questioned the wrong and unjust.

Satyarthi has contributed to the development of important international conventions on children’s rights.

Satyarthi has been active in the movement against child labour in India since the 1990s.

As a young child of five years, he was disturbed deeply when he saw a small boy working with his cobbler father shining shoes at the school gate on the first day of school.
