Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (popularly known as Jio), is a mobile network operator in the country. It is owned by Reliance Industries, headquartered in Mumbai. Jio provides 4G LTE services and is the only VoLTE (Voice over LTE) service provider in India.

The service, which was launched for all users on September 5, 2016 with a ‘Welcome Offer,’ was originally introduced in beta for only Reliance employees on December 27, 2015, to mark the 83rd birth anniversary of Dhirubhai Ambani, founder of Reliance Industries.

Jio had originally tied up with domestic mobile phone maker Intex to produce 4G mobile smartphones. But in the beginning of 2016, the company also launched its own LYF series of smartphones, starting with Water 1.

Reliance Jio was originally called IBSL - In June 2010, after the broadband wireless auction (BWA), Reliance Industries bought 96% stake in Infotel Broadband, which had won 22 circles in the auction. At a total cost of Rs 4,800 crore, it was the only company to have won broadband spectrum in all 22 zones across the country.

Infotel started operations as a telecom subsidiary of Reliance. In January 2013, it was renamed to Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited.

The actual launch date of Reliance Jio was December 27, 2015 - Although the company originally aimed at launching the services on December 27 2015 (83rd birth anniversary of Dhirubhai Ambani), it could only reach the beta stage by the time.

The service was made available to Jio employees and their family members for testing purposes.

Young employees- Jio boasts almost 60,000 young employees, working towards building the best data service network in India. The average age of Jio employees is 30.

Vodafone was planning for an IPO (Initial Public Offering) in 2016 before JIO was launched, this is because Vodafone wanted to go public and it needed funds to grew but as the JIO was launched, Vodafone cancelled all the plans to launch its IPO and it cancelled the listing till further notice

It has a fast growing digital audience with 800 million mobile connections and over 200 million internet users.

LTE enabled smartphones coming soon - Jio had earlier partnered with Intex to make 4G enabled smartphones, but later launched its own LYF series of smartphones with VoLTE support. The company is soon planning to launch LTE enabled smartphones as well.

It is not a secret that Reliance Group made a major investment in laying optical fibres across the country. The network of the optical fibre is believed to be 2.5 Lakh Kilometres long and the network is spread throughout the country

The optical fibres are the backbone of Jio’s Because of such an infrastructure, reliance will also be able to provide broadband in form of FTTH (Fibre to Home) to its customer and the speed will be much higher than the conventional broadband. The speed is speculated to be 1Gbps

The three-pronged focus on broadband networks, affordable smartphones and the availability of rich content and applications has enabled Jio to create an integrated business strategy from the very beginning,

The Reliance JIO doesn’t offer 2G or 3G services. The company only made the investment to offer 4G services and it is kept in mind that upgrading to 5G or later technologies would not cost a bomb to JIO.

Mumbai: Reliance Jio Phone users will soon be able to access WhatsApp, Facebook and YouTube on their phones, Reliance Industries Ltd chairman Mukesh Ambani announced at RIL AGM today while unveiling Jio Phone 2 at an introductory price of Rs 2,999. Ambani also announced a new Reliance Jio offer under which you can exchange your old feature phone for a new Jio Phone by paying just Rs 501.

Helps Company is reducing the expense as they can only focus on one service. As per an estimate, reliance invested Rs 15000 crores in setting up the network.
