Gravity affects the passage of time. You can practically stop yourself from aging when passing by a high gravitational field or age faster when passing a weak gravitational field.

Time dilation, in the theory of special relativity, the “slowing down” of a clock as determined by an observer who is in relative motion with respect to that clock. In special relativity, an observer in inertial (i.e., nonaccelerating) motion has a well-defined means of determining which events occur simultaneously with a given event.

A second inertial observer, who is in relative motion with respect to the first, however, will disagree with the first observer regarding which events are simultaneous with that given event. (Neither observer is wrong in this determination;

A notion of simultaneity is required in order to make a comparison of the rates of clocks carried by the two observers. If the first observer’s notion of simultaneity is used, it is found that the second observer’s clock runs slower than the first observer’s by a factor of Square root of√(1 − v2/c2), where v is the relative velocity of the observers and c equals 299,792 km (186,282 miles) per second—i.e., the speed of light. Similarly, using the second observer’s notion of simultaneity, it is found that the first observer’s clock runs slower by the same factor.

A closely related phenomenon predicted by special relativity is the so-called twin paradox. Suppose one of two twins carrying a clock departs on a rocket ship from the other twin, an inertial observer, at a certain time, and they rejoin at a later time. In accordance with the time-dilation effect, the elapsed time on the clock of the twin on the rocket ship will be smaller than that of the inertial observer twin—i.e., the non-inertial twin will have aged less than the inertial observer twin when they rejoin.

The time-dilation effect predicted by special relativity has been accurately confirmed by observations of the increased lifetime of unstable elementary particles traveling at nearly the speed of light.

Time never seems to do what we want it to. There never seems to be enough of it when we're late for work or school, but far too much of it when we have to stand in the pouring rain waiting for a bus.

These annoyances apart, it seems that time flows along smoothly; never bending, never changing its rate: always "on time".

This steady flow is so reliable that we fit our lives around it. We start the day when the clock tells us to, work when it tells us to, eat when it tells us to, and go to bed when it tells us to. Time, it seems, is constant

The clock paradox effect also has been substantiated by experiments comparing the elapsed time of an atomic clock on Earth with that of an atomic clock flown in an airplane. The latter experiments, furthermore, have confirmed a gravitational contribution to time dilation, as predicted by the theory of general relativity.

Time dilation is real! And anyone who uses a GPS, or the “My Location” option on Google GOOGL -1.48% Maps, is making direct use of the fact that time dilation is real.

That the flow of time is constant is seemingly obvious and this has been the prevailing view for almost all of human history.

Sir Isaac Newton, when he wasn't dodging falling apples, certainly thought time was constant. He gave us the idea of a "clockwork universe", in which it would be possible to know not only all of the past but all of the future if only we could say where every particle was, in what direction each particle was moving and at what speed.

This model assumed, not unreasonably, that time flows at an ever constant rate. As brilliant as Newton was, he was, much to everyone's surprise, wrong

This work considered time not as a single constantly flowing entity, but as part of a much more complex system, linked with that of space itself.

The idea behind time dilation is just as you describe, where your perception of time is dependent on how fast you’re going, or how close to a very large object you are. Interstellar actually did a remarkably good job of discussing time dilation in general, especially given how counter-intuitive ideas to do with relativity can be.

This is called space-time. Because space and time are part of the same entity it's impossible to move in space without moving in time.

. Similarly, when some of them head down to the water world, they feel time passing at a slower rate than the astronaut left on the spacecraft. Now, ignoring the exact numbers of this difference, which depends on things like how big the black hole is, how far you are from it, and how much movie magical math you’re willing to go for, this kind of time dilation does happen.

One of the most startling consequences of special relativity is that any moving clock slows down relative to a stationary observer

it also means that if your two clocks are the same distance from two objects, one which has a much stronger gravitational pull than the other (say, a planet for one clock, and a black hole for the other), the clock around the more massive object (the black hole) will run slower, even though both clocks are the same distance away.

There are of course many different types of clock, such as digital watches, clockwork clocks, atomic clocks and even our own biological clocks but they are all equally affected by the same principle, namely: moving clocks run slow
