Such lines of evidence have led to the tentative conclusion that H. erectus flourished over a long interval of Pleistocene time.

The hominids in the family tree shown here are grouped by genus, or by related genera in the case of the earliest grouping. The exact relationships between these species are not well understood

The fossils recovered at Koobi Fora are from about 1.7 mya, and OH 9 from Olduvai is probably 1.2 million years old.

The specimens from Sangiran and Mojokerto in Java may approach the age of the Koobi Fora skeletons, and one from the Lantian localities in China is roughly contemporary with OH 9.

While we do not know for sure what all the relationships are between different members of the human family tree, what follows is reasonable conjecture.

The youngest hominins generally accepted as H. erectus are from Tighenif in Algeria (800–600 kya), Zhoukoudian in China (770–230 kya), and Sambungmacan and Ngandong (Solo) in Java (perhaps less than 250 kya).

Among the Australopithecines, Homo erectus' immediate ancestor seems to have been either Australopithecus africanus or a species very much like it. Africanus gave rise to genus Homo, most likely Homo habilis.

Much of the fossil material discovered in Java and China consists of cranial bones, jawbones, and teeth.

Habilis is an early Homo species who was named for being a tool maker, or handyman. Habilis then gave rise to erectus. From there, Homo erectus migrated across Africa and then into Asia, going as far as China and even Indonesia.

The few broken limb bones found at Zhoukoudian have provided little information. It is possible that the complete femur excavated by Dubois at Trinil is more recent in age than the other fossils found there and not attributable to H. erectus.

Homo erectus had a brain size approaching that of modern humans. Averaging just under 1,000 cubic centimeters, this brain actually reached the lower limit of modern human brain size

It comes as no surprise, therefore, that the greatest descriptive emphasis has been on the shape of the skull rather than other parts of the skeleton.

Erectus was also the first human species to have a wide, fleshy nose. The face was flat and the skull had prominent ridges over the brow.

The continuing discoveries in Africa (particularly at the Olduvai and Lake Turkana sites) have yielded a more complete picture of H. erectus anatomy.

Homo erectus had shorter arms, which were a departure from Homo habilisand Australopithecus, indicating that tree-climbing ability had finally been lost.

The cranium of H. erectus, with its low profile and average endocranial (brain) capacity of less than 1,000 cubic cm (61 cubic inches), is distinctly different from that of other humans.

The average endocranial capacity of modern Homo sapiens, for example, is 1,350 cubic cm, although the range for recent humans is appreciable, perhaps 1,000 to 2,000 cubic cm.

The longer legs were better suited to running and walking long distances - a trait that doubtless helped Homo erectus migrate into Asia. Ranging from 4 foot 9 inches to 6 foot 1 inch and from 88 to 150 pounds, Homo erectus was the first ancestor to approximate modern humans in size.

The upper part of the maximum estimated range for H. erectus endocranial capacity (1,200 cubic cm) thus overlaps with the lower values expected for Homo sapiens.

In fact, except for the brow ridges and smaller brain, Homo erectus was perhaps the first species that we might consider to be essentially human.

Homo erectus was possibly the first hominid to use fire. This may have helped them migrate and adapt to different climates in parts of Asia. They also made complex stone tools, a technique which they passed on to succeeding generations for more than a million years.
