The new layout was designed to slow down fast typists and place the keys most likely to be hit in rapid succession on opposite sides of the typewriter. This was done so that the machine would be less likely to jam.

The first man to question the QWERTY layout was August Dvorak, who created and patented his layout in 1936. Dvorak layout allegedly incorporate less finger movement which lead to faster typing speed and reduced repetitive strain injuries.

The arrangement resolved the jamming problem, but it created two others. First, many common letters are not located on the center row, also called the "home row." Second, some of the most common letters are concentrated on the left side, favoring left-handed typists.

There is an ongoing debate whether these claims are true or not. While Dvorak layout is still a niche, most of operating systems (including Windows, Mac OS X and Linux) give user the ability to change keyboard layout to Dvorak.

The QWERTY keyboard continues to be featured on the vast majority of computer keyboards in English-speaking countries even though the reason for its creation, to minimize typewriter jamming, ceased to be relevant with the invention of electric typewriters and computers.

You don't see them now, but in the 80's and early 90's keyboard computers (computers that fit inside bulky keyboard) was common in people's homes. Commodore 64 and Amiga 500 was notable examples, although they were popular mostly in Europe. In the mid 90's they were dethroned by the PCs.

The Dvorak keyboard is considered by some to be a more efficient design because it concentrates the most-used keys on the center row of the keyboard. Advocates claim that Dvorak's layout allows 70 percent of the keystrokes to take place on the center row, compared to 35 percent with the standard QWERTY layout.

Is statistically a woman (typist was and is a strongly feminine occupation). Currently, the official world record is held by Barbara Blackburn (typing in english). Unofficially, Sean Wrona set the world record for typing over a minute and 50 minutes intervals.

Although QWERTY is by far the most widely used layout, some popular operating systems (such as those by Microsoft and Apple) have a built-in option to accommodate Dvorak as well as QWERTY keyboards. In addition, one-handed Dvorak layouts are available for typists using only the right or the left hand.

The word Typewriter can be typed using only top row on QWERTY keyboards. Some speculate that QWERTY inventor - Christopher Sholes - did that on purpose as a kind of demo back in the 19th century.

Many operating systems include support for keyboard layouts for non-U.S. typists. For example, Microsoft Windows operating systems support dozens of "locales"—a locale determines how the computer accommodates regional language and conventions such as keyboard layout, sort order, currency format, and date, time, and number format.

Today we have early adopters in technology gadgets - people that are ahead of rest of us in using a cool, new stuff. But early adopters were always there. Most notable early adopter of typewriter was Mark Twain, who wrote his Life on the Mississippi in 1883 (although probably he just dictated to the typist).

Some non-U.S. language keyboards are electronically identical to those produced for U.S. customers, but they have special key caps and a special software program, called a driver , to translate each keystroke into the appropriate symbol for that language. For example, a Thai-language keyboard would need a Thai driver to translate keystrokes into the correct Thai characters.

Because long periods of typing on regular keyboard can lead to strains and is generally detrimental to your health, ergonomic keyboards were discovered. Usually they feature split-keyboard layout with slightly tilted surfaces to accommodate hand anatomy.

Ergonomic keyboards were developed to address hand, wrist, and arm ailments common among typists. Awkward wrist positions can lead to muscle, tendon, and nerve damage in the wrists (carpal tunnel syndrome ) and forearms because of diminished blood supply or compression caused by inflamed tendons.

Another type of ergonomic keyboards are these used by gamers. They can feature additional keys and gizmos that relate to particular game or common games activities.

Ergonomic keyboards claim to reduce the incidence of repetitive stress injury, including carpal tunnel syndrome, by positioning the keys for each hand in a more natural position for the typist's arms, wrists, and hands. Ergonomic keyboards include wavy keyboards, split keyboards, and separate keypads.

Is a famous keyboard shortcut to soft reboot or bring a Close Program dialog on Windows. The idea for soft rebooting via keyboard came from David Bradley (IBM). This shortcut was chosen for safety reasons, to avoid accidental trigger.

Keyboard operators should pay special attention to ergonomic factors in their work environment. The chair and keyboard should be positioned so that the typist can sit up straight with feet flat on the floor and both arms able to move freely without hitting the armrests or becoming fatigued.

Many countries have more than one national keyboard layout. In most of these countries one layout is overwhelmingly more common than the other (Turkey, Poland). In other countries, there are few equivalent layouts: in South Korea there are few Hangul layouts.

Chinese use Traditional, Simplified, Cantonese and Taiwanese variants. India has one layout (called InScript) for all its official languages: hindi, bengali, gujarati, gurmukhi, kannada, malayalam, oriya, tamil and telugu.

A frame, or set, of keys presented in a continuous arr. The purpose of kbds. is to enable the 2 hands (e.g. on pf. or harmonium) or the 2 hands and 2 feet (org.) readily to control the sounds from a much larger number of str., reeds, or pipes than could otherwise be controlled. One standardized apparatus of this sort, which has been gradually developed over a long period, has come to be universally adopted

On QWERTY keyboard, these are stewardesses (among other 12-letter words) for left hand, and polyphony for the right hand. According to this research, Dvorak layout can produce 14-letter words with only left hand used, for example overemphasized.

it is by no means the most convenient imaginable, but the conservatism of musicians will probably prevent its supersession unless some drastic change in the scales used in mus. (e.g. by the general adoption of microtones) makes such a change imperative. The unchanging span of the octave is determined by the average span of the human hand.

First email ever sent contained the qwertyuiop, all letters from the top row of QWERTY keyboard. As Ryan Tomlinson (the man who did it) explained, he just needed something to put in the email to test if it's working.
