Today some people seek to reverse those inventions and advances. Many people are convinced that organic foods are safer for human consumption than more intensively farmed alternatives and that they are better for the planet. Organic food is certainly better for the pockets of those involved in the industry with organic products market worldwide being worth $63billion in 2012 from items produced from just 0.

meaningful change to consumption patterns and the environmental impacts of food production though, will have to involve knocking animal products off the menu, especially beef

Farming is high-tech. Farmers use iPads, laptops, drones, robots, and more. Many livestock barns have Wi-Fi, web-cams, and automated feed and climate control systems. Farmers can monitor a cow in labor or adjust the temperature in a barn from their smart phones.

The world population will jump from 7 billion to 9 billion by 2050. Farmers will need to double food production by then to keep pace

For most of human history, even with early developments in agriculture, the labor intensive nature of the work meant that most people had to struggle to produce enough food to feed us. It was believed, by many people such as Thomas Malthus, that population growth would eventually outstrip supply leading to famine and misery.

If the power goes out, back-up generators automatically start and the farmer is alerted with a text. This technology enables farmers to be efficient and provide precise care to their animals.

Livestock farming feeds billions of people and employs 1.3 billion people. That means about 1 in 5 people on Earth work in some aspect of the livestock farming

What is good criteria for one person, may be shocking for another, says Louise Manning, senior lecturer in food production management, Royal Agricultural University.

Time and again, however, human ingenuity has managed to increase the productivity of crops and the land used to grow them. Even during some of the worst famines in human history, for example the Irish Famine or the Soviet famines caused by collectivization came about as a result of human responses to a crisis. Ireland, at all times, produced enough food to feed her people but it was required to be exported to England, collectivization was an ideological war on the peasants of the Soviet Union which resulted in a famine that destroyed many of their own population.

For every $1 spent on food, farmers get less than 12 cents for the raw product.

Farmers are smart. They are problem solvers. They use math often. Most are tech savvy. They must have a good business sense to be successful.

In terms of animal welfare, stocking density might be considered an indicator of negative performance but in terms of resource management, a positive one.

As a result of technological advances our world has always been able feed itself. The problem is in distribution and not supply.

The phrase “fetch the farm” is prisoner slang from at least 1879 for “get sent to the infirmary,” where there is a better diet and not as much hard labo

have a higher education including a college diploma or trade/vocational certificate. Some choose an agriculture major like agronomy or animal science, but others study business, mechanics, or another area to hone particular skills that will benefit their family’s farming operation.

The WRI report on Creating a Sustainable Food Future estimates that we need about 70% more food in 2050 than we have today in order to provide every one of the 9.6 billion world population with a daily intake of 3,000 calories

The organic lobby relies on the (mistaken but tempting) belief that the more organic a diet is, the closer it is to the simple foods our ancestors ate and therefore better for us. These claims are not true.

Farmers care about the land and water. Several years ago I took a group of college students taking an environmental science class to visit a cattle farm and see conservation practices first-hand.

It's a huge challenge, but unlike other sustainability challenges, everyone can play a part in the solution.

The Dust Bowl forced tens of thousands of farmers, known as Oakies, to leave their farms. The Dust Bowl exodus was the largest migration in American history.

Whether or not we eat an organic diet people around the world are healthier and live longer today than at any time in the past thanks to all the advances that separate modern agriculture from those first tentative steps towards wheat cultivation 11,500 years ago.

During the visit, the farmer told the students “This land isn’t mine.” I watched the students exchange puzzled looks since he had just told them that the farm has been in his family for generations.

Everyone needs to eat, so be it reducing food loss and waste, eating lower-impact diets or investing in sustainable production - countries, companies, and consumers can make a difference
