Trees are the longest living organisms on Earth, and never die of old age. The Old List is a database of ancient trees that officially tracks old trees, their species, and location. Methuselah, from California’s White Mountains, comes in at over 4,800 years old.

\Just like humans, trees need water to survive--and they drink a lot of it. In a single day, a large tree can consume 100 gallons of water out of the ground and discharge it into the air as oxygen and water vapor. Keep in mind that many conditions play a role such as the size of the tree, species of the tree, humidity, temperatures, sun exposure, etc.

Strategically planting trees and shrubs can save you up to 25 percent on your energy bills. Not only do they provide shade in the summer, but serve as a windbreak in the winter, too. (Get more information on smart landscaping.)

“Moon trees” were grown from seeds taken to the moon in early 1971. After orbiting the earth with the Apollo 14 mission, these tree seeds returned to earth and were germinated by the Forest Service. After being planted with their earth-bound counterparts, these seedlings showed no discernible difference after twenty years of growth.

Trees are able to communicate and defend themselves against attacking insects. Scientists have found that trees can flood their leaves with chemicals called phenolics when the insects begin their raid. They can also signal danger to other trees so they can start their own defense.

Leaves appear green because chlorophyll absorbs red and blue light energy, causing the green energy to bounce off the leaf’s surface.

Pine cones have genders. Male pine cones shed pollen and female pine cones make seeds. When the wind blows pollen into the female cones, you guessed it, the seeds become pollinated.

Trees are all plants and carry out the life processes that all plants share. However, trees are not actually a scientific group of their own. Trees may be cone-bearing plants (gymnosperms), flowering plants (angiosperms) or ferns.

The "knock on wood" tradition comes from a time when primitive pagans used to tap or knock on trees to summon the protective spirits that resided in them.

A tree can absorb as much as 48 pounds of carbon dioxide each year and can sequester 1 ton of carbon dioxide by the time it reaches 40 years old. It is estimated that United States forests absorb about 10% of the country’s CO2 emissions each year.

A stand of old mānuka trees (Leptospermum scoparium) at Orokonui Ecosanctuary with regenerating bush and trees underneath. Mānuka is an angiosperm - all the forms of this species have white or pink flowers

Trees are all around most of us. They grow in the wild and are cultivated in yards, parks, and even along the median of streets to provide shade and beauty.

Trees can help you find your way if you get lost in the woods. In northern temperate climates, moss will grow on the northern side of the tree trunk, where there is more shade. Also, a tree’s rings can help point you in the right direction too. If you’re in the northern hemisphere, you can see the rings of the tree grow slightly thicker on the southern side since it receives more sunlight. In the southern hemisphere, the opposite is true, with rings being thicker on the northern side.

All trees are perennial plants. Many tree varieties live for tens or even hundreds of years, and they tend to live longer than most other types of plants.

However, for all that familiarity, it can be somewhat difficult to define what makes a tree different from a shrub or other woody perennials.

Trees are generally at least 13 feet tall, have a trunk of at least three inches in diameter, and a defined crown. Shrubs, on the other hand, are woody plants that usually grow close to the ground and do not grow beyond 13 feet in height

The tree with the world’s greatest recorded tree circumference {girth} is the Santa Maria del Tule, an Montezuma Cypress. As the trunk of the tree is not circular in shape but in reality has a distorted and irregular shape, you can’t multiply the diameter by 3.14159 {pi} and come up with its true approximate circumference {girth} which is in excess of 160 foot. It is approximately 141 foot tall and over 2000 years old.

If a birdhouse is hung on a tree branch, it does not move up the tree as the tree grows.
